1968 Ford Mustang Coupe. $8500
Car is a rolling shell ready for paint/body work and reassembly. I have everything needed to complete the car.
Car originally was a Metuchen NJ 289 automatic Car. Painted Acapulco blue with standard black interior.
Now has a 302 out of a 72 Fairlane and a C4 auto trans (Out of car on a stand)
8” open rear with 2.79 gears
I bought every part needed to reassemble the car and have them stored in bins. (I have all the dash pieces, bumpers, gauges, interior panels, mouldings, taillights, you name it I have it. I have all the original glass to the car in good shape as well. I even have all the AMK body hardware kits for the car. I have all the new parts for the front suspension and steering components. I have the transmission lines, brake lines etc.
So literally you have every nut and bolt to put the car back together. Ive had the original seats reupholstered already as well (in original standard black). The owner can have all the receipts for the car as well.
All metal work/rust repair has already been Completed with photo documentation (included w/car for new owner reference):
The following parts have been replaced with new metal parts:
• driver/passenger fenders
• Hood (Ford Hood)
• Front Valance
• Doors
• 1/2 Quarter panels on both sides
• Wheel houses on both sides
• Trunk floors
• Trunk Pan
• Trunk Brace
• Taillight Panel
• Rear Valance
• Both Torque Boxes
• Full floor pans on both sides
• Battery Apron
• Interior Cowl hats all new metal
• Cowl Vent Panel.
• New door hinges
• New weld on subframe connectors

Dmac - with limited memory the 289 couldn't be an orig for 1968. I think it ended in '67. Same engine really TMK for much design,
You are testing my memory of those cars new!

Hey Tom, long time no talk.
your right the 302 did first appear in 1968. But 1968 was the last year of the 289.. and it was only a 2barrel.
the 289 cars were C-codes
and the 302 were J-codes (vin character)

Exceptions to most anything and I believe you.
Off the topic: Coolest and fastest car I ever drove was a 68 Cougar, GTE - 427 R Code with factory tricked C-6! Egad! (later found Ford lied and it had over 500 HP but stated just 390 which is plenty alone!)

 I wounder why they would say it had less HP then it really did..

Old thread but let it stand archived. The key once was both to meet guidelines like the 9.9 HP limit on powerboats and 500 car limits on cars etc., that exceeded mass production and the amazement that one brands of something was blowing the doors off of a competitor's brand rated the same.
Mercury marine (Kiekhaefer[sp?] - Mercury) were former Chrysler engineers routinely understated HP of engines, gained wild market share.
Ford made the 427 R code about always a special order and well hidden but can be found is GM's 302 small block - I think just 1967 put out insane HP in Camaro Z-26 (think that was it) and others detuned a bit but still at car shows - have seen them in person - the rarest in private collections.
Memory seats in a 55 T-Bird! Yup, driver 1 and driver 2 buttons all mechanical memory like radio station presets of the era. The big three ruled the world with more prototypes of things never brought to market than can be counted ages before stuff became commonplace,

They underrated the HP because the insurance companies would put up heavy surcharges or not insure coverage on those high powered cars. There was also the safety aspect and the environmentalist putting up a huge stink. They also rated the HP at the crank without all the accessories involved until later when they rated the net horsepower after all the accessories as they do now.
IMO true horsepower and torque is at the wheels not after the engine.
What is impressive is that the 2012 super Stang 5.4L has a net rating of 800 hp. It would probably have a gross hp of 900 hp if it was made back then. With a smaller engine, lighter weight, and more efficient at transferring power it would make that 68 cougar seem like a granny mobile.
The GTE 427 would be around a 15 sec car in the 1/4 which is slow in today's comparison. It just goes to show how far they have gone in engine development.

DS - young and friend owned the Cougar GTE which I drove. Can't say actual HP but was insane - well so am I.
No stopwatch but the trick C-6 was at 70mph in no time before I could pull my head off the back seat!
Guess -- an 11 second 1/4 mile car?
