belle 1998 Corolla CE My engine check light went on. I checked all fluids, and checked for overheating. The car appears to operate fine. I heard that auto parts stores will hook up a diagnostic tool to find out the error code etc. Most do so for free- when it appears dealers are charging a min $50 for the same 2 min process. It reads: PO136, 02 Sensor malfunction, Bank 1 Sensor 2. My question: I understand there are 2 sensors on this model. Is this the one before or after the cat. converter??? Please advise- Thanks!

Hi, I just got yesterday similar code error- same wards but p0141 code. Did you get any response from someone on the forum on what that problem is?
Do you have any idea what this problem means (Sensor Circuit malfunction) ? I have a mitsubishi.

I have the same problem. I thought it was the gas tank cover, but I changed it and still the light came on. Also, when I fill up my tank, I have to turn the key a couple of times because the car won't start up right away.

I've heard AutoZone will check your code for you and maybe others. I'd be concerned with fuel pressure in you car. Can you hear the fuel pump with key in just run position - should build pressure then shut off. That and test the real fuel pressure available and go from there,

Most auto parts stores will read the OBDII for free and save yourself the $60 or more that dealers will charge for the same 2mins work. This is what I did... You can also look up the codes on the net although I can't find the link - try a search under OBDII codes... I did find a site: http://www.autotap.com/articles/Replacing_Oxygen_Sensors_Preventive_Maintenance.html which tells you about 02 sensors... You can also go to autotap.com to find other good information...
My Toyota has two sensors. Some cars have more than two sensors.

If a check engine light has just come on and the vehicle seems fine I suggest wait a while - it just may go out and have sensed something that isn't permanant or needs fixing right now. Just a thought, T

I have this problem with my 1998 Toyota over a couple of months. When I took the car to my dealer they charged $45 and come up with a code which meant that I need to change "oxygen sensor" costing a lot. They however reset the "check" light and asked to go back if the light came again. It did come back again, but I didn't do anything. The car is running fine though. One mechanic told me that if I don't change the oxygen sensor, other than loosing gas mileage, nothing would happen to my car. Is it true ?__please help.

It may run well but it's not right. The failed sensor may be caused by something else. The info sent by O2 sensor may be making improper adjustments to cause loss of fuel economy and could just very well hurt converters or kill them so I would chase that one down,

I use a diagnostic tool called CarMD. It will pretty much tell you whatever is wrong with your car as long as it is a 1996 or newer. It costs about $90 and it plugs into the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) port. Very easy to use. Heres a link to the site if you want to check it out: http://www.carmd.com/
