Are Extended Warranties Worth It? Sign In

I am about to settle the paper work & pick up my 2008 Toyota Rav4 (4cyl Ltd) in a couple of days. My question is this: Are extended warranties and car protection packages (rust proofing, paint protection etc.) etc. worth getting? From what I have read, most books say no, - but I wanted to ask all of you directly.

As far as paint, rustproofing and upholstery preservation stuff I find it a waste. A can of Scotchguard does fabric just fine, and waxing car helps keep it stay cleaner, aftermarket rustproofing is just a warranty and the goo they might put on might actually cause problems and most cars sold to the US are bound by laws not to have rust-thru holes within 5 years and I clearly recall when cars had full blown holes in less time than that! No longer though.

Read the fine print. If the warranty will be voided by not going to a dealer for service where costs might get jacked up find out what the mandatory service will cost to keep the mechanical part of the warranty. Hyundai for example, really screwed some folks depending on the state you live in mandating that only the dealer could do the work at many times the price you could have had the same thing done which totally covered their butts in $$ if there was a claim later.

I would avoid warranty offers that are not by the manufacturer. Calculate the up front cost and deductible per repair that might be covered vs just paying for one if something does happen. Sometimes you win - most of the time they do -- your call,

Also factor in how long you are planning to keep the vehicle. And remember, the extended warranty starts on the day you pick up the vehicle. So you are paying for warranty coverage that the dealer already provides for free for x months and x miles. Just something to think about. So figure what it is going to cost from the end of factory warranty. If factory is 3 years and extended is 5 years, you are actually pauing for 2 years. However, it is sure peace of mind for the new owner. So weigh your options and I am sure you will be happy with your decision. Good luck.

Yeah! This warranty will pay for your vehicle's covered repairs after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. If you want more about extended warranty then I would like to prefer a site called http://www.extendedwarrantyshopper.com/ you can get all about extended warranty. Hope this will help you.
All the best!
