I have not looked into this as I have no need to at the present time but may in the near future. Northstar engine, where is the starter? Was told it is beneath the intake manifold. Is someone blowing smoke up my ? Like I said though, I've no need for it now, just curious. Labor has to be a b (high)

Just Googled the whole web and starters can be under intakes. I think Lexus does that nasty trick too. Could NOT find a pic showing a starter for the Northstar starter..........Best I can say is follow battery pos cable and see where it goes. Others may know exactly, T

It's underneath the intake manifold. It calls for 2.2 hrs. Tom is right, the V/8 Lexus starter is underneath the intake, depending on which one you are working on the time ranges from 3.8 to 5.2 hrs. Seen a guy change one without cleaning the battery before checking. I saw the battery and said "you're kidding! clean those terminals 1st".. he said "Naw I checked it, it's bad"... He got it all back together, hit the key and.......click..... I said "man that sux, you just got .25 to do a Lexus starter"

Note: GM side post battery terminals are a problem. So can any type but those are notorious as Sidom suggested. Note II: Stater takes all a battery is worth for just those few seconds and all the connections need be known good. With GM usually right at the battery even if at a glace look good they may not be. If starter needs replacement - think new if tough to get at. You can fix starters but if that much of a PITA pay the $ for good stuff so you don't become this site's expert on that one! Side note: They do make quality spice-able cable ends. Haven't seen them for a while but real parts stores should know if you need them. McParts places may have the deals but not the real help so don't be fooled. That $2 bucks saved can cost you! Do it right and do it once! T

So, if this job ever comes around, looking at a new starter and intake gaskets. Has anyone ever done one to see what other parts would be needed? Basics I know, 2 gallons oil, filter, anti freeze etc.

Actually I haven't had the pleasure of doing one of these yet. If anything I'd say buy the waterpump socket, no way to do one without it ( well actually there is but it took 2 of us & it sucked) & those go out all the time.........

Thank you for the time & trouble looking this up. I will have to get "emotionally" prepared (hic) for this when the time comes!

Yeah, but it wasn't near as good as when Earnhardt took out Rusty Wallace many years ago at Talledega. Loren SW Washington

I have a 98 deville and the starter has been acting up for a couple weeks now. It's been taking a few turns of the key to sluggishly turn over. However when I went to start it today, it just makes the grinding noise that it would make if the car was already started. I'm hoping that I'll be able to just change the solenoid and not the whole starter but... Should I have started a new post for this?
