Driver seat lacks support

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has advice or experience in resolving the following problem. I have back problems, both sciatica and coccyx, which cause me great discomfort when driving more than a few hours. My 05 Cadillac Deville with the 60/40 front seat has a 6-way seat adjustment but I still cannot find a comfortable setting. I also use a memory-foam coccyx cushion but it does solve the problem. Has anyone found a resolution to this problem? Would a bucket seat provide better comfort or support? Any suggestions? Thanks

For what it's worth, keep trying and ask your doctor about products that can help. Quick search showed this site on portable stuff..... http://sitincomfort.com/backrests.html Ok: This is a family issue as well. I don't personally have any problems but have owned a zillion different vehicles over as many years and each has a personality. Same model of same year can be different. The high end vehicle may not be as good as the cheapest version - it's unique to each person. I can only say that leather as a surface doesn't help with devices in general and likely that's what you have. Bucket vs bench is not an answer by itself. All the "lumbar" and other adjustments some cars come with don't hit the right spots for even myself without a problem! It's sad but I have myself and known several folks get rid of a car over the damn seat! When you choose your next vehicle I strongly suggest you give it a lengthy test drive or if a new car buyer - rent one of the exact type you want first. You may be able to negotiate an extended test drive too. It's an awfully expensive situation to bail out on a new car for something you can't really fix. This is an important issue for many. Please reply with any items or luck you find and keep this thread alive, T

Thanks T. I appreciate your response and plan to have an extensive test drive of my next vehicle, whichever one that may be. It is sad to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a vehicle and not be comfortable in it. Thanks again

Hello, I find it really interesting that you mentioned that problem. I am a student from Vienna and at my university we are currently working on a project which concerns the same problem. We carried out a survey about the latest trend in automotive seating rails and we found out that most people feel uncomfortable with complex operating devices when they want to change their seat positions. What is more, this problem concerns drivers who are handicapped or sick or elder. It is too complex to adjust the seats well. There is definitely a need for a more easy way of finding the best position. Have you found any solution yet? I would appreciate any comments or ideas:) Thank you and best wishes. gyorsi

For now when it comes to customizing a seat for a compremised person it's really a one by one item or adjment. So far there's no "one size fits or solves all" solution, Been there done that got the t-Shirt - it can stink! T

hello, thanks for your comment. I do not really understand the last sentence..where have you been and what T-shirt? there is a sweden company (autoadapt) who designed seats of this kind. They also state that it is impossible to create a seat that fits to all. What they did was to design a seat which is very easily adaptable to the special needs of the buyer. So once the seat is delivered, it can be adjusted without special technical knowledge.

Let me re phrase some things - knowing now you are from Sweden perhaps some local speak is confusing. "Got the T-Shirt" is a reference to having been there. Folks who travel buy T-Shirts from that place as if to prove they were there sort of thing. ************* I have owned entire cars and sold them simply because of a seat. All the adjustments in the world don't always cut it. It was once a prime area of engineering that I'll name "Ergonomics" which isn't in all look ups or dictionaries. It basically means the fit to you planning - seat comfort - reach to controls - placement of arm rests, the steering wheel and more like where the pedals are relative to the most folks. What is an average person??: Example- Perhaps a male = 5/10" and weighs 165lbs. Then the mirrors and all adjustment should work for that size and you still need to think of women being smaller and shorter on average and make it right for that also. If you are really good - you make a vehicle handle the extremes! Think of like basket ball players who average over 7 ft tall and the troubles a car can be! Some cars back when had two bolt down settings for the driver's seat to change the range. I've known of folk to use blocks of wood on pedals to reach them properly. Some now are adjustable and it's painstaking engineering to make a vehicle "just right" for everyone as you can imagine, T

Loren: it is ok, thank you, I'll try my best to understand everything and I hope I am able to answer with proper English:) Tom: actually, I am from Hungary, but I do not want to confuse you:) I study in Vienna, in Austria and I talked that person in Sweden:) In our project we are looking for innovative solutions for the adjustment of car seats forwards, backwards and crossed. COncerning motion elements regarding car seats (splints, gliding elements, locking methods) there have not been any revolutionary innovation for decades. SO my main issue is to find users who experience the same or similar problem with the car seats and have own ideas how to solve the problem. What is more, they have already modificated or tinkered with regards to adjusting car seats or have developed their own innovative solutions because they were not satisfied with existing solutions. DO you know people like that, or can you recommend me where to find these people? Thank you very much for your kind help:)
