There is a thread that started on the Bargin Bin that ended up here. This is a serious concern to many and I think it deservers attention. The issue is that auto makers have ignored this for the most part. Why? There is a market for it even if the vehicle needs some alterations for specific needs. Please post thoughts about this here and maybe we can make a change for the better, T

Hi again, Tom. Just a thought - you might want to correct that spelling. I hope this gets some response, because the very people whose income is limited because of a handicap otherwise have to spend big bucks to get a difficult to use vehicle reworked so they can get around. As we discussed, there will be many more of these people needing specially equipped transport in the next few years (just the growing numbers of seniors will do it) - and those who are handicapped for other reasons will also benefit. Right now, I don't need one, but can see the possibility that I will in the not too distant future. Some things can be repaired in the human body, and some just need to be accommodated. Here's hoping it gets easier to do that soon.

Spelling corrected and thank you as close up eyesight is a slight problem. No excuse it was my fault. Back to the handicapped equipment my Mom has an electric scooter which really could be handy for a family wedding this June -- 130 miles away. the dang thing weighs about 120 lbs and I can't wrestle that thing by myself?? Getting there won't be a problem. I'm the closest by miles to the start and end of that trip which is scheduled in Maine at a family home on a lake. All need to travel to attend this event. My Mom will be the biggest challenge. Gotta keep this going. There are ideas out there about how to customize a vehicle to make it more user friendly. One item that left inventory is a steering knob. Made illegal by this state You can still get them but sold as tractor knobs. Depending on need they can be very helful, T

Hey Tom, any luck figuring how to get that cart into the vehicle? I was wondering what I would do - and would probably take a sheet of 3/4 in. plywood as a makeshift ramp with a couple holes drilled to wire the plywood so it won't fall while pushing the cart up. You should be able to stash the plywood inside the vehicle along with the cart so you can bring it back after the trip. If it were too big, I would cut it in half and wire a double ramp. (I had to do a lot of makeshift stuff when I was a single Mom with no help available.) I look back at those days and wonder how I survived. (Also wonder how my son survived to become the world's best handyman. He's a lot better than I was at it. LOL) Lee

Right now my Mom's electric device is able to be taken apart but she could never even lift the parts. She has a real light four wheeled walker type thing she can manage to put in her car without folding it up and she only would go shopping at places that have the powered carts and does make it with two canes to get in the door of those places. If a family gathering we do have a regular wheel chair and of course has plenty of help. As far as a ramp the trouble is what you would do with the wood for use at destination. They have all kinds automtatic stuff already engineered that you can get but then it would probably have to be a full size van and you take the driver's seat out and your device can be locked right in at the steering wheel. Lifting devices are remote controlled for the ramp device and opening the door. I don't know any prices for this stuff but I'm sure it's outrageous. If needed I have to hunt down a different vehicle for my Mom if she still wants to drive at all, T

This really does get complicated, doesn't it? I guess I thought you were going with your Mom to this affair. Anyhow, it's too bad this stuff isn't a lot easier for the disabled. We can only hope the auto makers (or somebody) will see a developing market for the medium/low income disabled so prices will come down some for useful vehicles. Lee

What I meant is I would see what's available and then go with her to finally choose or just maybe they can do what might be needed to her Suburban but I doubt it, T
