Remember when cars were straight forward and and a few different ways of doing things engineering wise? You had to get points and plugs a couple times a year and the best of the best cars got over 10 MPG!
Dragging your brakes thru puddles so they would be dry and work at your next stop was routine. Remote controls was something NASA was working on -- NOT what opened your car doors or started it.
All car radios worked the same way! Pull the knob on the station you wanted and it remembered it. Left knob was on or off and volume and you didn't have to read a manual to use it.
All cars also rusted out way to quick but somehow we put up with that.
I owned cars before even seat belts were required and never had a problem. Mom or Dad made kids ride in a back seat and babies bundled up in a carrier in the back on the floor.
Go way back which is before me and you bought gas by how many gallons you could get for a dollar!
Gas Wars - Now that's a memory!
For you Canadians - remember the Imperial gallon? I've always loved Canada and some of the differences.

Tom,
you forgot to mention those "Good Old Mechanical brakes."They were easy to work on, the parts lasted forever, and if you did need parts they were cheap. Only one problem: you were lucky if you could stop with them. That's probably why brake peddle pads were a big seller in those days.

I always loved the fundamental genius of some engineering now forgotten. Of the few things that really impress me in the last 40 years is tire technology. I pre-date radial tires. The best you could get was bias belted. Tubes - what a pain looking back. Tires could have blow outs! Remeber that? Just driving along minding your own business and Kaboooom -- instant flat tire with peices or rubber flying around. No problem -- you had a real spare or go back further and you had two spares!
Battery dead? No problem. Just push it along - jump on the running board and pop the clutch in second and you were on your way. Can't afford a new battery? Just park facing downhill all the time. Good old days,

Yes, those were the days when you could work on a car with nothing more then a screw driver, a crescent wrench and a roll of bailing wire. My first car came with a crank, so dead batteries were no problem. However, you had to be very careful or you went around for awhile with your arm in a cast.

I'm bad! I still own a vehicle with the spot for the hand crank but don't have the crank. It's a tractor but based on a GM engine from 1948. 6V pos ground electics that would really screw up the kids to understand

Yes those were the days when it was a snap to fix a car even us girls could do it if we wanted to. My Aunt was good at getting a car going she grew up around guys who worked on cars. Back then people did their own repairs. Things were simple if it did not start and you had fire it had to be a gas issue. Check the filter and the pump nothing else left but the carb. I had a Toyota with starting issues. Just made sure I parked where I could give it a good push and then jumped in and popped the clutch. Started every time never did find out why it would start some time but not every time. Changed the starter a few times but at times it still only clicked when I tried to start it. At least it I stayed in shape.

This reminds me of a time back when we had a reg carb. I was at a car wash getting ready to steam clean the Eng. There were two guys in the next stall doing the same thing. They were making fun of me doing it myself. We got done about the same time. They could not get their car to start. I got in mine and it started up right away I drove to the vacume out my car. when I was done they were still trying to get it started. It was now my turn so I went over and asked them if I could be of any help. The guys had not covered the carb and the breather was off. In fact they had not covered anything. They thought cause they were guys they did not have to do this. I then had the chance to laugh a little. Left them there I figured this would be a good lession and next time they just might not laugh at a girl.
