Perhaps shoes are worn into drums from overadjustment. The drum can wear and leave a ring that won't let it pass over the shoes. There is no adjustment cut out on the backing plate so I guess I will have to resort to more violent techniques, like breaking the retainer pins as suggested. All I want to do is check the wear on the shoes! JEFF K. Tom Greenleaf Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator Aug 30, 2007, 8:33 AM Post #4 of 5 (4540 views) Re: brake drum removal Sign In Know that I'm am suggesting on the basic idea of how these things work and your exact car may be different than one of even the same model year than the one I'm remembering that did that to me. There may be a metal knock out thing to get at the adjuster either on the backing plate or the drum - that I'm not sure of. The shoes have hold down springs with an outer washer out-of-site now with a slotted hole. The pin that goes thru the bcking plate is like a nail with a end at the washer that is like hammered to a flat half oval with goes thru the slot in the washer and when turned locks there. Buy the hardware kit first and look at what I'm talking about is worth a million pictures and words to describe. That will be the weak link when this is forced off and break there. It could and probably will damage the linings on the shoes. Plan on this being a full brake job. With the problem as I think it is now you need to do something even if they had some more life left in them. You would have to machine that drum or replace it to be able to just look in there now and then anyway without this always happening. If the drum does not wobble like it's trying to come off at all we have to work on that. It may be stuck by rust, need a puller, or may be a standard dust cap, cotter pin, nut and greasable bearing type for removal. I have to trust your judgement on what you are looking at in front of you. If something is inconsistant with what I'm describing please tell me before more trouble comes of this.
