Went to change plugs in01 Subaru Outback with 115,000 mi, pulled boot off #1 plug and was greeted with engine oil oozing out. I know this is not good, any ideas? thanks in advance

Is this an internal leak? Like does the firing end of the plug have a problem? Sometimes a bad gasket in a valve cover can do this if external, T I should move the post but won't right now........

Not sure if it is internal leak, but that is my guess. The spark plug wires on this Subaru cover the entire opening so when I poped off plug wire oil was in & coming out of plug area. But was quite a bit of oil, did not pull any other plug wires yet. Hooked it up to OBDll beforehand and code read out needs tune-up. Car still runs and oil dipstick shows full.

This is going to be tricky! I suppose that if the plug wire's boot can hold oil in that it is not letting any possible external leak let oil in. About the only thing I can think of is a flaw in the head. In the absence of an overheat along the way this would have been a flaw waiting to happen since it was new. I would talk to a Subaru dealer and find out if there's a recall or a TSB on this as it will be pricey to fix this, T

after further inspection i found oil in #2 plug hole as well but i plulled the plug and it appears as the leak may well just be valve cover gasket on that side of engine.

I hope it's just a gasket! You could possibly test for an unseen leak using a non flammable powder and see if it leaves evidence, T
