7mm isn't a very big gap to jump in open air. Thats why I was suggesting a test light. Take the nail that is going to battery ground off and use a test light in its place, that way you can get closer or farther out from it to see how far it can jump

I've got an 87 750R, had it since new and have just gone through the same thing... I can tell you it just won't run unless you've got the stock air box sealed up properly, Including the big egr line to the top. Check also that the water drain to the air box is still there otherwise plug up the two ports. It just won't run with the air box off... I just tried it after cleaning my carbs, same symptoms as you exactly. only runs on choke or high revs.... And oh what a bitch it is to get all that assembled. When you get it all sealed up it will run sweet. Like a miracle. Or something. Your spark is fine.

I had almost the same problem as your. Engine would only run if choke is activated. Tried synchronizing the quad carbs still no luck. Turns out it was a clog fuel filter. After getting a knn fuel filter from link deleted ................ not allowed Engine went back to normal.
