With a parallel twin or single motor, is it mechanically feasible to turn the cylinder backward with intake forward and exhaust out the rear.

If you turned a typical internal combustion engine backwards (not just pistons) it would draw in exhaust and exhaust out intake. If you want to change an existing one you'd be out of any chance of succeeding at that IMO. I don't have a clue what you are really trying to do? T

I was just wondering if there is a mechanical reason why a typical motor is configured with the exhaust leaving the front of the motor and then making a u turn. If you want your exhaust out the back, just face the exhaust port out the back. And if the intake ports and carbs face forward that woild have a ram air effect.

You have too much time on your hands. Why does a hood scoop or a supercharger point forward on the hood of a car? Answer: to catch air, not just because they wanted to. Have you ever seen a hood scoop mounted facing the rear?

As a matter of fact ... yes. It's called "cowl induction" and was first introduced on early GTOs.
