I have a 1981 Suzuki GSP1100 motorcycle. It runs but after awhile the alternator housing fills with oil and gas and kills the battery. Where it is coming from is the mystery. Can you help?

I don't know anything about that bike. My gusse is it's ran off the cam or crank and there is a seal that seals the shaft it runs on. The seal on the shaft is done if shaft has excessive end play could cause wear of the bushing behind the seal.. Im not sure about your bike, but some of them you have to split the case to change that bushing and it may wear out again if there is excessive endplay.

The other posiblity is the crank case is not venting causing the oil to be pushed past the seal. I'm not sure how they are vented on that bike. find the vent make sure it's working properly and replace the seal.

What does the battery have to do with the alternator housing filling up with oil and gas?

Sounds like a bad seal as Z theorized. Can you run the engine with alternator cover off to see if you can locate the leak? I am not a motorcycle tech, but this shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Wait! Why I am responding to this old thread?
