1987 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 187000 miles I have a 1987 chevy 1/2 ton truck with a new crate motor (5.7 litre)(only bout 10,000 miles on it)I installed it bout 3 years ago. after the install it ran fine for a while but then started stalling out at any given time, either while driving or jsut sitting at idle. I have replaced the ignition control module several times because it was bad(under warranty thank goodness) but today i tried to start it and it wouldnt start so got under the hood and tapped (with my hand) on top of the distibutor cap then it started. so i thought "well" so then while running at idle i tapped it again and it stalled. Tapped it again it started but now now i cant get it to stall(by tapping it) but afraid to drive for fear it may stall again.Oh, and the pickup coil has been replaced(a while back, before this started happening) and i recently replaced the cap and button because for some reason they were worn pretty bad. so maybe someone can help me?

Two things likely for no spark or intermittent spark: You can see the wires to the module. If they are rubbing anything espcially is this is using a vacuum advance they were a common trouble spot. Insulation may even look ok and not be on those wires. I'd also suspect the coil. Take it out making sure the grounding metal peice is there properly. I guess the coil itself could do this too and the plug connection to any of it could as well, T

Sorry! Still check out any connection and I forgot to mention that the cap should have a carbon pile thing the must touch top of rotor as you know. There are stong clues in that you get it to act up or correct with tapping on it. If elusive enough I think I'd start replacing those items, T

bigolbeergut; Love the moniker. I'll bet I've got you beat, though. I've been working on mine for 58yrs. Check the coil wire, especially at the distributor cap end. Very common for corrosion. Check all of the terminals on the cap where the plug wires attach. Loren SW Washington

Again thanks for your time Tom and i will check the wires and i just recently replaced the cap and button,(maybe a month ago)cannot believe i am having this kinda trouble, i really love my truck and thought all would be well after installing the crate motor myself, it was like having a brand new truck there for a while. Oh and is there a way to check the coil for any trouble or is replacing it the answer? Again thanks Oh and yes Loren you do have me beat!

To add... Check the Distributor shaft reluctor magnets, they have a tendency to crack.
