1994 Chevy Silverado HELP... Sign In

Ok... I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado, single cab, 5.7 liter V8, 4x4 with 186,555 miles on it... last Saturday I backed into my place to unload some wood... when I got in to fire it up, it would not start. It cranked and cranked and cranked, but not fire. I drove to the auto parts store and bought a new battery (the old one was apprx 5 years old). Installed it, still would not fire. I took the "out" end of the fuel filter off, when I cracked it over - fuel came jetting out. On second attempt, fuel just trickled out... so I replaced the fuel filter... still no start. A friend of mine asked me if I heard the fuel filter "kick over", and I did not... so I turned the key over to listen and heard nothing... he told me to "tap" the tank with a hammer, so I did, and I heard the fuel pump "click", then start "humming", so I jumped in and it fired right up... after I turned off the truck, it would not fire... I tapped it (tank) again, and it fired up... now before I devote my time/effort in replacing the fuel pump, is there anything simpler I could check first? I don't know enough about trucks to know. THANKS

No, I'm afraid you have a bad fuel pump. It's very common on GM products. Be sure to use Delco brand only. Changing it a second time is no fun.

Thanks what I was afraid of... just wanted to see if there was possibly anything else it could be... If not, where is the fuel pump (in the tank, on top the tank??) and how hard is it to change?

THANKS

The pump is inside the tank and to replace it you have to either remove the tank or lift off the bed. Lifting off the bed isn't as hard as it seems. 6 bolts and a few wires and a way to lift it. Removing the tank can be dangerous if you don't have a good way of supporting it.

I was told moving the bed is safer/easier than dropping the tank... And once I get the bed slid back to access the tank, the pump is right there? Easy to change?

Yes it's easy to change.

The only thing I would add is to change out the electrical connector as well. GM also has a problem with those. If you get an aftermarket pump the new connector should come with the pump, not sure on an OE but it would still need to be changed........ (no one ever seems to wanna spring for OE...Laugh)

Yes, it will be right there.

I'll tell you what i do......... I remove all the bolts for the bed on the left side annd just loosen them all but the last couple turns on the right side and then use a pole jack at the left fenderwell and tilt the bed to the side. Just make sure you use safety block under the bed so it can't fall on you.

I believe it's 6 but 8 is possible. They will be real obvious along the frame rail.

Blow all the dirt away before removing the lock ring.

Could not get the bed bolts out, so we dropped the tank... just a few minor issues, but we got the old pump out and the new pump in... re-assembled and she fired right up. Thanks for all the help..

Did you add a little gas down the TBI unit to see if it will fire at all? its a good way to help narrow down a possible cause.
