1994 Chevy Truck Loud Whining

Alright, first off, It's a 1994 Chevy 1500 w/t v6 with about 215,xxx. It's got a really loud high-pitched whining/squealing sound coming from under the hood. As you give it more gas, the pitch gets lower and softer, start coasting and it's right back to how it was before. I took off the serpentine belt and started it with no change. Also got a new belt... lol, no idea how it was staying together. Any suggestions? Vacuum hose?

It's possible for vacuum to make noise. Usually just hissing but anything possible. There's less manifold vacuum with load and more with coasting. Certainly worth checking all areas that seal manifold actual vacuum. Use spray of water, carb cleaner can work but with extreme caution on anything hot and in minimal amounts (don't if not familiar and ready as it can flash fire on you) - wiggle any hoses and air intake to see if changes can be had. Not just hoses but seals of throttle body, intake gaskets - anything sealing vacuum, even EGR. If nothing found it could be internal engine or trans so try to isolate it best you can and go from there, T

I have a 93 chevy.. I could hear the whining noise on the inside.. We tried everything from new distributor to new belt everything.. Come to find out the noise I was hearing was the gas lines touching the truck body causing this noise.. Pulled them down covered with rubber and now its gone.. I am not sure if this is your problem.. But my truck was doing exactly what you have decribed.. If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

sometimes the strangest things happen, and you always remember them because finding them drove you absolutely nuts. Thanks for sharing that idea. I've never heard of that happening but I'll be sure to look for it next time I get a customer with this problem

Having the same problem with my 1994 Chevy 1500, 215,000 mi. I couldn't take the noise anymore, or having everyone stare/glare at me as I drove through their neighborhood, so I went in to talk to my friend, a mechanic. (I know absolutely NOTHING about engines -- stereotypical girl) He took a listen and said it is the trottle body gasket. According to him, it's not too difficult of a fix, and I (or hubby) should be able to do it ourselves. Picked up the part from Napa today ($7), and hope to get it installed tomorrow. Now, off to look for some directions...
