I have a 1995 Ford E150 1/2 ton van with the 5.8L engine and automatic transmission, 135,000 miles. I recently heard some wheel bearing noise, and I replaced the front bearings, but the noise did not stop. I have all the Ford maintenance manuals, so I started the process of pulling the rear axles to replace the rear bearings. When I removed the small lock bolt in the center section, it came out obviously broken, thus I could not proceed with the axle removal. I tried drilling the bolt remains for an EZ-out, but was unsuccessful. Any ideas on how to get these axles out? Thanks for any help.

I've used a left twist bit the size of the bolt to either get a bite on the bolt and spin it out or drill it out if it does not spin . You only get one chance to do it right and you had that . All you can do now is keep drilling CAREFULLY till pin will slide out . Then work on getting the remaining threads out of the carrier. I have also taken a small sharp chisel and hit across (side to side) at the bolt and split the pin . Theres a chance you could crack the carrier if hit too hard . Take your tiime . Theres no magic bullet.

One more question, re-tired. When you say to "take a sharp chisel and hit across (side to side) at the bolt and split the pin", I'm not clear on exactly what you mean, because the lock bolt, if that is what you were talking about hitting, is already out of the carrier. And is the pin that I would be splitting in this maneuver the round retention pin that, when removed, allows the axles to be pushed inward and C clips removed? Thanks again.

Dan dont know how you did . sorry I did not respond ealier. The chisel idea is a last resort deal . TRy hard to drilll it out . sometimes you can remove the LH bearing cap to get a better angle .There are several kits on the market that say makes it a snap to get out. Google "rear axle retaining bolt remover" to see one. Or try NAPA.
