1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

133,000 on the 4.3 vortec. Truck has new wires, plugs distrib. cap and button.
While driving in town, holding throttle at constant low speed(25 mph in 3rd gear for example), its seems to starve out, or loose power. A slight missing out feeling, but more so of it just loosing power. If you let of, and get back on throttle, it picks up fine, or if you climb into while its faltering, it picks right up. Again, until you travel at a steady low power.

Seems worse right after starting it up, hot or cold. once at highway speeds, it seems to go away.

any input?
thanks!

Get codes if you can. OBDI may or may not help too much. Seems to me more like a low RPM thing brings this on? Vortecs need to stay in close fuel pressure range and perhaps if voltage drops to borderline might not keep up well. Truck's gauge is an indication but would be nicer to observe it and fuel pressure while happening and that can be done if you have some stuff,

This truck is going to be a hybrid of OBD1 and OBD2 and you will need a professional scan tool to get codes.

Unplug the EGR valve and drive the vehicle to see if your symptoms go away.

I would try to get the codes read before unplugging anything so you get an accurate assessment of stored codes.

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

update...
someone informed me i had an exhaust leak(I dont hear so well), and patched that up, and the problem has stopped.
Could it have been a back pressure/O2 sensor issue? the leak was big, right behind the cat converter.

Still looking for someone with the tester/scanner for this year of truck.

Thanks for the help thus far!

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

That is strange. If the exhaust leak was near the front O2 sensor, it could cause the sensor to register lean which makes the PCM add fuel. Adding fuel to an engine that doesn't need the fuel trim to be enriched at that rpm and load can make it have drive-ability issues.

Thanks for the follow up and glad to read your problem is fixed. Closed as solved. Can be reopened upon request by the OP.

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

i posted back in september last year with this same issue. Truck is an s-10 4.3 TBI, currently 144,000 miles.

my trouble happened on and off since i bought the truck used(123,000), for a day or two it would loose power under acceleration, or would loose power under steady throttle input. For example if i shifted from 1st to 2nd(manual trans) and held throttle steady, after a couple seconds, the truck would stutter, shake and loose power...it never backfired, popped, jerked or jumped, just slowly lost power.
If i let off throttle, and re-apply, it will accelerate for the same couple seconds, and then falter.(if you go back to original thread, the O2 sensor came up in discussion, i found an exhaust leak nearby and fixed it, problem went away...but its done that before)

big difference is the truck has done this a total of 5 times since ive owned it, every time before after a day of driving(20-30 miles) it cleared up, now it has not quit, going on a week of symptoms.
Unlike before, even just a day of driving the truck in this condition, its using a ton of gas.

I am planning on changing the plugs just for the heck of it, it has new wires, dist. cap and button less than 20,000 ago.

also let me clarify, i dont have a fuel pressure gauge, or compression gauge, i know that would help immensely, i do have a friend who has the scanner (evidently its a special hybrid dohickey) that can run codes on this engine, when i get those results, i will let you know the findings.

Until then, your expert thoughts are appreciated. Local guru's have mentioned a sensor that might be causing the problem, enough of them to cause me to order said sensor, i wont mention its name, in effort to see if their thoughts are inline with yours.

Also, unlike alot of folks who are unaware, oblivious, or could care less...my generation were gearheads, we did alot of things with small block engines, repaired them, made them faster...but the modern advances in engines and technology left me and my generation sitting in the dust, and looking like idiots in a field we were very experienced...what im trying to say, i really appreciate the knowledge available here. I know how much wisdom and knowledge cost, and i for one appreciate it. (i know what points are...does that date me?)

Don't worry, there are some old ones here. I worked on engines with metal spark plug wires (straps) and vacuum wipers and I'm not even the oldest one here.

! What are points? You mean they did away with magnetos? LMAO - still have stuff with points, lucky it's even electric start!

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

Changed the plugs and the PCV valve, and the Throttle Position sensor(what the locals suggested)...no change.
While i had it torn down, i fired the truck up and played with the throttle while watching the injectors, or spiders i guess they call them. Saw no change or lack in fuel flow while holding steady throttle, but the engine still faltered and lost power. Never a back fire or pop that comes with crossfire.
Also my feeble internet skills told me to watch for dripping of the injectors, at idle or after shutting truck off, no dripping.

Gonna take it to a buddy who has the scanner, also plan on taking a new fuel filter with me, so he can test puel pressure.

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

If you can see the injectors you have a TBI system, not a Spider system.

I don't see anywhere that you have monitored the fuel pressure during this problem. You're going to have to do that. Don't just keep throwing parts at it.

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

i do have a TBI system, there are 2 "what i call injectors" above a 2 barrel type butterfly carb.

There will be no more parts thrown at it, i assure you.

again, shows my internet skills. I thought they were referring to the TBI injectors as spiders.
Excuse my ignorance.

Re: 1995 s-10 low speed issue Sign In

Checking fuel pressure can be a pain because that system doesn't have a service port. They make an adapter that can go where the fuel filter is.
