Never run an engine without a thermostat! It can't cool the back of the engine when you do that - hope no damage for just that trick.

Does fan come on? Those sense heat and pull hard then freewheel if like most of the 4.6 of the era.

Radiator could be NG. May not hold pressure - intake is plastic on these and can crack an ear off on one corner which would leak and can't run normally if it can hold pressure.

Why does subject line mention removing just one cylinder head if that's what you meant?

Yes, you will have to make sure the valve timing is indexed correctly when you install a cylinder head on an OHC engine. You need special tools to set the cam timing on those. Suggest you review the vehicle service information procedure steps for cylinder head removal installation on that one before you even attempt that. If you have never done something like this before, it really isn't something for a novice.

What is the condition of the cooling system on this? Is the coolant nasty or rust? Do you have to add coolant? Does the heater work? If the heater works and you turn it on full blast when the engine is running hot, does that bring the temp down?

The reason I was gona take the head off was the back left plug blowed out and I can't get it back in it has had a heli coil put in the same one befor but I didn't do it but u think I should try to put another helcoi in it or take th head and have it reworked and as for the running hot part the radiator doesn't leak but it has had stopleak in it befor and the fan does kick on every time

That is ironic because I have a mustang GT at the shop, that I am going to have to time sert tomorrow.

They actually have a time sert kit for those that is much better than helicoil. But if it damaged the threads the helicoil was screwed into, your going to have to remove the head and it will probably need to be replaced.

If the heater is stopped up, the radiator could be also.
