i'm new to vehicles, not even totally sure on how to check fluids properly, esp. the transmission fluid (e.i. hot/cold check).
anyhow, i was pouring in some transmission fluid, but i didn't properly check where i was pouring it into, which was the engine oil dipstick.

i know the trans. fluid dipstick is where you pour the fluid, and it's pretty similar to the engine oil dipstick to check engine oil level, and that's where i poured it in. about 1/2 of 1 liter.

once i realized what i'd done, i quickly drained the oil, hoping it wouldn't mix together.

the vehicle is a 2004 Ford F-150 FX4, with a 5.4 L V8 Triton engine. Also, the person I'd bought it off had been using synthetic oil.

the engine wasn't running while i poured it in, i'm not sure if your supposed to leave the engine running while pouring in transmission fluid.

You'll be alright since you drained the oil. A little transmission fluid in the engine won't hurt anything. If you had drained the oil and then filled the engine with transmission fluid and was driving it around, then that is another thing.

Why are you adding transmission fluid? Usually if you have to add transmission fluid, that either means you have an external leak or someone had serviced it previously and didn't put enough in.

The transmission fluid should be checked when it is hot. That means you need to drive the vehicle for a few miles to get the fluid to operating temperature. Operating temperature is normal driving, not pulling a trailer up a mountain or doing 90 down the interstate.

With the engine running and transmission in park, pull the transmission dip stick and see if the fluid level is on the hot mark.

Make absolutely sure that you use Mercon V transmission fluid. Dextron or any other types of transmission fluids aren't compatible with the clutch material inside the transmission.

If it's the 04 new body style they where famous for the seal going between the trans and transfer case causing the transfercase to overfill. Check the fill plug if ATF starts pouring out then then thats where it's going.
