4 wheel drive steering strange?

1993 Chevrolet, 350 cu. in., 4x4, auto, ps etc. While in 2 wheel drive trucks rear wheels chatter (chirp?) while turning. Occasional noise in differential when it is chattering (chirping?) It feels like it is stuck in 4 wheel drive, but 2 weeks out of the month it doesn't do this. It also makes no difference when I try to use the shifter to re-engage 2 wheel drive. The shifter for the 2 to 4 wheel is electrical too, and I'm reasonably sure this is where the problem is. Anyone familiar with this problem? My nephew said his buddy told him that it was caused by the "lockers," but then couldn't explain what "lockers" were?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a limited slip differtential, then it is the clutches chattering. You would need to drain the fluid and refill it adding a small bottle of friction modifier which is available at most parts stores. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for answering me. I'm totally unaware of the type of differential I have. I'm guessing the VIN #s will tell me if I have that feature. I'm also assuming you mean changing the fluid in the differential?? Clutches? Wow, vehicles have truly evolved beyond my comprehension. Again I'm unaware of clutches in the rear end. This the second 4x4 I've owned, both GM '93s, the first one I wrecked, so I really know very little about them. When I turned 50 yrs old I tried to quit being a shade tree mechanic & now at 61 yrs find I'm going to have to learn it all over. Again, thanks!

Another way to find out is the jack both rear wheels off the ground in park with the brake off and rotate one tire by hand. If it rotates easily and the other tire rotates the opposite direction, then you do not have limited slip. If the wheel locks in either direction, then you do.

Okay, none of the local auto supply's knew what a "friction modifier" was. Never heard of it. I went to all of them, Car Quest was last in line. So, I went over to the gear oil shelf and started reading different additives. There wasn't anything on the shelf that said specifically "friction modifier" but trans-x had a posi-trac limited slip additive that I bought simply because it said it eliminated my specific problem. (chirping) I then removed the diff. cover to drain the oil & all but had to coax it to come out. I'd go so far as to say it hasn't been changed since GMC put it in new in 1992! Several pieces of aluminum were in the oil, looked like a cotter pin that had been cut up?? Anyway, after lots of cleaning, I put it all back together with the additive and new oil. It didn't eliminate the problem totally, but it did help. I had never seen a diff. built like this one was, so I'd say it is safe to say it is a limited slip.

If you saw pieces of metal, then it may be too late for this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

gizz: you are dealing with some phart smellers here - ohhh I mean smart fellers. I have one of these myself w/o limited slip and wish it did sometimes. Plow snow and sucker can still get stuck At least the snow is done for the year. Good luck with the fix, Tom

Thanks for touching base Tom, actually there won't be a fix until there is total failure. The truck is better than it was before I changed the oil & the more I drive it the better it seems to get. The metal I found worries me, but Ill be waiting for the end.
