5.7 chevy 3500 fuel issue Sign In

1997 chevy 3500 2wd single axle crew cab 350ci 300000mi. I replaced the fuel pump on sunday. drove the truck all day tuesday and it died on the way home. I check the fuel pump and can hear it pumping. check the new fuel filter and the arrow is pointing toward the engine, depressed the needle valve and have pressure when I turned the key. poured gas in the intake and I have fire. What am I missing. Thanks for your help

You're missing the exact fuel pressure. You need to use a gauge to test pressure. Merely seeing pressure at the port is not enough. This engine requires a minimum of 55 PSI to run.

I will go to auto zone tomorrow and rent the pressure tester and get that info. Thanks

There's your problem. You don't have enough fuel pressure.

You need todiagnose it to find out what is causing it. Find a section of rubber line on the return side and pinch it off and see if the pressure spikes up. If it does, the regulator is bad, if not, the pump is bad. Double check the contacts at the plug going into the tank and into the pump. There is a known problem with weak contacts there.

Re: 5.7 chevy 3500 fuel issue Sign In

I pinched the line and still had 50 psi. I put the pressure tester inline behind the filter still 50psi. I dropped the tank and pulled the pump and low and behold it came off of the bracket and every time the pump twist it was pulling itself off of the 2inch hose it was attached to and was almost off when I pulled it out. Put it back together and all is good. Thanks for all of your help. This is a great service you all have here at CarJunky.com and even though I do not enjoy working on cars like I did when I was younger. It is great to know there is a resource like CarJunky.com to help when I need it. Sly Thanks again HammerTime.

You're welcome. Glad you got it resolved.

PS: I hope you put some clamps on that hose.
