Will a faulty map sensor keep a 1986 ranger from starting?

Only if it is shorted to ground inside the sensor. You can unplug it and see if it will start. If it does, replace the sensor. You can try unplugging each sensor one at a time to see if it will start. What are the symptoms? Turns over but will not start? Will not turn the engine?

Thanks, I will try unplugging the sensors inthe morning. It was running with an occasional miss. It seemed to miss more while under heavy acceleration. We changed the plugs and wires earlier this year, had a mechanic look at it, never got all of the miss out of it. the other day it was missing a little more than usual, parked it, turned it off and it won't start now. It turns over but seems to not fire. we put a new distributor cap and plug on it, the old one was slightly dirty, replaced the sensor on the back of the distributor and it still won't start. Pulled a wire from the distributor and it doesn't seem to be firing. Tomorrow we are getting a code reader and will see what it says. So I guess we will go from there!
Thanks for the info.
