89 E150 Econoline Van 5.8 Engine Replaced fuel pump now wont run Sign In

Hi,
As the title states, we replaced the Inline High Pressure Fuel pump, the one on the frame and now it turns over but wont run. It was running hard before and had a whining sound. The sound is gone and the fuel pump engages, engine turns over but it seems it is not getting gas. I read online there is a inertia switch on the driver side but can't find it. Does anyone have an idea why it wont run now and if there is such a switch where it might be located. Thank you

First, if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge then you need to either get one or pay someone else to diagnose this problem. Certain tool are just necessary to diagnose these problems.

You can try spraying some starting fluid into the intake to see if it's a fuel problem but that still won't tell you the cause of the problem or if it's even a fuel pump problem.

The Inertia switch is located Under right side of dash, on heater plenum. Make sure the red button on top is pushed in.

I don't think it's that switch (red button for cars) you just pushed it, see if voltage went in and out.

If not working or tripped it really shouldn't make sound now, plain no power to pump(s) if two tanks IDK if two)

For now don't let it try hard or long unless a hose to a gas tank in another out to another.

Cars you could test on fuel rail has a Schrader you can remove (it's old) or just push it like tire valve I think same size no sure if same Shrader.

It would leak on engine (cars) just to "run" key position don't let it start if bleeding is to there if it would PRIME pump if dry IDK how well it will pump if too long trying dry you'll wreck the new one if any good.

Fuel filters should be done same time no matter how old filter is.

Sounds silly does it have enough gas?

I'm off line in a bit see if switching does anything.
Still worried about the primary pump to fuel rail is sucking air for now? Don't let it.

Pressure test U do need an adaptor the needle for Shrader is deeper than for tires, T

Everybody is getting way ahead of themselves. So far you don't even know if this is a fuel problem and if it is, is it because of lack of fuel pressure or lack of injector pulse.

You can waste all kinds of time chasing your tail if you don't do some testing first.

You don't know if it has spark either. That's why we do these things systematically.

Re: 89 E150 Econoline Van 5.8 Engine Replaced fuel pump now wont run Sign In

Hi,
Like I said earlier, it was running before I replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump. There is a spark as it turns over but wont stay running. When the pump was replaced it ran for about 30 secs then died like it was not getting any fuel at all, like something turned off. I didn't change anything else, so it should just run after replacing the pump, but it is like something turned off or tripped and now it no longer gets gas. Its a very old trunk and i would not be comfortable pulling gas lines off and he can't afford a mechanic atm. Thanks everyone for the information, just not sure why it was running before the change and now it isn't.

Back to my previous advice. You need a fuel pressure gauge as step one. Otherwise you're not going to know when it's working properly and when it isn't. There are still many possible causes here, especially with having dual tanks using electric switches.

I have contacted my friend to get a test kit and we will try and locate the test valve on the van, as I am not too familiar with this van. Thanks again everyone for all the information.

The test port is on the fuel rail.

Pull the carpet/mat back. It should be obvious.
