91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Husband got gas at station, truck died there. Attendant said water in gas. Did all the normal stuff to fix it like drained gas, cleaned tank and lines, replaced filter and pump. Truck was still running rough and today truck will crank but not start.Any ideas would be so helpful! Thanks

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Did you see water in the fuel tank before you cleaned it out? You can tell if there is water in fuel because the water appears as dark blobs on the bottom of the tank. Water is heavier than fuel. You can actually use a siphon to suck the water from the bottom of the tank without draining the fuel if you can get access to it all.

Another thing is if the attendant at the station claimed there was water in the fuel, why did they continue selling it. If water was in their fuel, they should have reimbursed you the cost of repairing your vehicle.

You should start at the beginning. Read this and post your results:

Yes, my husband did and Department of agriculture was called out to the station to test it. Several other vehicles also got the water contaminated gas. We have no clue what to do next. Thank you

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Well, it appears you have gotten the tank and lines cleared. Was the fuel rail purged out also?

If all that is good, you still need to start with the basics in the link pasted above.

We had a customer a while back that got contaminated fuel. We had to clean the tank and lines on her Honda CRV. She got reimbursed for repair and fuel with the repair order she was given. I guess it is too late for that because you had already started repairs yourself.

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

The attendant signed his receipt, told him to come back later and talk to the owner. Owner said gas company not him was responsible. He said he would give us a week, take it to a certified mechanic, pay for repairs and then turn our receipts in. He said they may or may not pay for repair . With seven kids and Christmas around the corner we can't afford that. The station has black bags on all of their pumps now.

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Sorry to hear about your troubles and that the owner is making it appear that he/she is going to maybe reimburse you. That is crap in my opinion. If the owner is selling watered down gas that causes customers' vehicles to quit, it should be the responsibility of the owner to pay up. Then he/she can settle it with their supplier. It's not your fault their tank(s) were contaminated.

That is all under the bridge now since your hubby decided to take on the repair. Your hubby is going to have to figure out what is missing that allows the engine to run. That post that was linked above will tell you what is missing. The fuel pressure checking may be a little difficult because you need to tap in a fuel pressure gauge, but it is critical the engine is getting the correct fuel pressure and volume to run or run correctly.

He installed a high performance stealth high flow 340 fuel pump. Could that be a problem?

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

I don't personally know anything about the stealth pumps or what it looks like, but it could cause a problems if it flows a whole lot of fuel to the injectors so that the fuel pressure regulator can't control the fuel pressure correctly. Why go high performance? A good name brand replacement pump that is designed specifically for that vehicle can be bought at your local parts store. It is also possible depending on how that pump's connections are inside the tank that it could be wired wrong making the pump spin backwards.

Not too sure on that one. He would have to monitor fuel pressure using a fuel pressure test gauge to see what kind of pressure is going on. Which engine?

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Sorry this happened #1. It does from groundwater, condensation and supposed to be checked at tanks now too late.
'91 Model any thing could have rust in tank now aggravated and moved along. It ran for a while so see if plugs (check a few) are rust covered badly. If so just maybe needs a new tank as my guess is new plugs will do it again.

Working on this yourself instead of sending it out totally on the gas station may really bite you for full fix now.
Plenty could continue being trouble for some time clogging and doubt real water is all out. I think only 99.9% isopropyl alcohol* is known to make water remaining( a little bit) stay mixed and burn off and ethanol will suspend water but can let it return to lowest spots like Italian salad dressing or oil+vinegar.
*One known called "Thermo Aid" sold by NAPA made by Mac's products I think - container marked with %.
Again - you may never end this without a new tank, blow out everything and keep new fuel filters on hand.

Stinks: Worked some place where metal (in ground) tanks did this with a line of cars that made it just down the road still in sight all paid for in full by owner's of tanks no argument then too clearly THE problem.

I don't envy you with this problem. By rights they owe you a rental vehicle till THEY take care of this!

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

for others who are dealing with same issue
did you speak directly to station owner and company supplying the fuel?
they have insurance.
your vehicle is a NISSAN- Is there no Nissan dealer near you? Also Nissan parts come from NISSAN- not a cousins old jalopy.
your rental while they repair- why has this been ignored?

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Hi, he spoke to the store owner. He said it wasn't his responsibility but that of the gas station. He gave us only one week to take it to a mechanic and get it fixed. He said then turn in receipts and he would turn them in but said they may not pay for it anyway. To be honest we didn't have the money to take it to a mechanic especially if we may not get our money back. Left us in a tight spot , thanks

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

That answer is just crap. The gas station is totally responsible for all repairs and providing rental car if needed. I wouldn't take no for an answer. Get a lawyer if necessary. They can recover their fees from the station.

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

If need be go see or call a lawyer. It barely matters how it happened and seems that part is uncontested just now who is responsible to make it right for you.
You may not know who owned the fuel, the truck that delivered fuel or more about it just that you paid for it a place "X" and it caused this problem.
I can't know small details for each area but you shouldn't be bothered or put out much more over this up to some up front money for the trouble it's causing you right now - right away not the final costs of getting you back to where you were before it all happened.
Hate the thought actually but you should talk to lawyer without even that costing you a cent and get the ducks in a row on this,

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

The fuel truck didn't deliver water. The water seeped into the tank on the ground.

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Thanks everyone, I believe we will probably have to speak to a lawyer. I really didn't want to go that route, we just wanted them to repair the damage that was caused. They haven't been very helpful at all. I really appreciate everyone's advice we are so concerned with money so tight right now we kinda feel helpless. I will make sure I post updates with any progress made.

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Again sorry this happened at all and expect some PITA all about it. Keep track of all info along the way. Lawyer if used run any $ you may get quickly be seen that it isn't a final end to the situation or damages.
Another vehicle rented: Again watch out that it is 100% insured even if you own wasn't. By that I mean if that vehicles is lost for any reason that wasn't totally on purpose by you losses covered in full. Heard of that - car rented was paid for but the month to get another for them they lost rental time without it!
Curls your hair the bull on stuff. Lawyer should find a case # already of who is the paying party for the incident. Read fine print of any settlement and have an understanding with the Lawyer as well that, that expense isn't yours at all or find another lawyer too. The greed never ends. There are "deep pockets" in this (oil companies) never mind anyone else somehow it could involve them and by then I hope you don't hear of details just get back to life as it was before this and all fixed up.
Never good timing for crap like this so hope you can get this monkey off your back till no doubt you will be asked to sign something that calls it the end and be pretty dang sure it is the end and truck is fixed and you are as sure as you can be that it is.
Good luck. With any this will just be one good phone call and you can relax and forget it at ZERO costs to you,

Re: 91 Nissan, water in gas Sign In

Ok, wanted to give y'all an update. The inspector from Department of Agriculture went to the station and took a sample. The station still had bags on their pumps. He then came to our house and took a sample of the gas that came from the truck. He is sending it to the lab but he said from the looks of the samples we shouldn't have a problem getting the truck fixed. He also spoke with the gas company .
