I have a '92 s10 4x4 auto. trans. with a V-6 4.3 with 100,000 miles + on it. Last winter it started taking a long time to shift out of 4x4 ( on the fly or parked ) back to 2wD. It got to the point of never going back into 2wD. I ended up taking the transfer case driveshaft out to have 2wD until I had a chance to work on it. I have checked vacum lines and
put in a new vacum reserve cannister. The vacum diaphragm on the right inner fenderwell that the 4x4 shift cable goes into holds good vacum also. Could my 4x4 shift cable be stretched, worn, etc? Since it gradually took longer to shift out of 4wD, I was thinking the 4wD shift cable has stretched over time. I thank you in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

thanx,

Hi Bill,

This is NOT my strong suit but I had trouble with my 97 C-2500 4X4 but my trouble was it took forever to engage. Being from this biz I know the best tranny person within 1,000 miles and the problem was common to him and was a servo and heater wire. I plow snow with this critter and it's the 4WD that you must go back to 2WD on even wet roads - a dry road is impossible!

It might be best for you to seek out an honest trans shop. I believe the parts (wholesale) were about $200. I get prof. courtesy for most of my needs and they don't pay me either for what I do!!Smile Some things are cheaper farmed out in the long run. If you need special tools and all that it just isn't worth it for a one time job. - T
