I took my van into the shop for inspection, and they said it needed 2 tie rod ends and 2 idler arms. I was a little suspicious only because it was over $600, including markups for items they sell for less in the same store. Well, the steering is tighter now, so they didn't lie about that.
But the van was drifting the same as before, so I took it to have a different technician and manager check the alignment. He worked on it for an hour, after which both of them insisted it was already fine. The manager conveniently avoided giving me the printout he was holding.
I still had nagging thoughts about the grease fittings. I avoided paying the warranty charge, and I thought, would they be so stupid as to not grease the parts they just installed, in order to make it fail quicker?
Well, it turns out they did not grease 3 of the 4 parts, and one of them did not even have a fitting, just a gaping empty hole. When I confronted the original manager, he said they were "sealed units" which is a bald-faced lie. The 2nd technician did not bother to do it either.
I don't mind having them fix stuff when they were lazy (the alignment) but not greasing the parts is a 5-minute critical job that they *decided* not to do on purpose. Obviously, I could have taken it back *again* and had them grease it *again,* but at that point, you're basically asking a rapist to pay for your abortion.
I gave them a $550 shot to win my future work, and they blew it in the dumbest, most predictable way.

Okay, what would it take to get an auto mechanic to feel that they are loved and/or accepted by society? The only emotions I get out of these guys are poker face, fear, and guilt. You never know if they are satisfied because they never smile or shake your hand.

Ok , you have a legit complaint IF it went down as you say, we'll trust you on that . If its a chain type store ,file a complaint , when it gets to the corporate bean counters they WILL take notice . They are very image concious and customer sensitive. AS for what will it take to make a mechanic feel loved , how about not lumping them in the same pot. There ARE good morally straight techs out there. When's the last time you gave a small tip and a thank you for a good job . ( it had to happen once in a while) And for our part we will try not to lump all customers as cheap grumps .
