I have a 1996 Chevy Z71 4x4 vortec 350 279,000 miles,anyway the alternator went out,I bought a new one not a rebuilt one,changed it out,put a new distributor cap an button and new sparkplugs.I crunk the truck and it was skipping real bad,every light in the dash is on and the battery cable is getting very hot.Where did I go wrong??

Immediately, disconnect the negative battery cable, and check the battery wire going to the alternator (it's the larger one going to the post on the back of the alternator). Sounds like you've got a short to ground. If you're getting a spark at the battery when you touch the cable to the battery, you've got a short. Once you've found and corrected the problem, then check the firing order; You may have 'crossed' a couple of wires. (Be sure to charge the battery, first, before starting the engine with a new alternator) The alternator is not a battery charger, and you can damage it if the battery is very low. Could explain why the cable is warm. Loren SW Washington
