I'm shopping online for a rebuilt for a 1985 Ford F250 with 460 engine.Carb tag no. E3TERD. The prices range from $195.00 to $465.00.None are very explecit about what they do.Example are you getting new floats? I could use advice on where to shop ,how to determine what you are gettin. Also is there a simplier carb from prior years that would work? We have no emission inspection that you must meet. Just want it to run decent. Thank you,

Frankly I'd go for the cheaper if warrenteed. Composite floats usually should be weighed but who knows. You could also do this yourself for much cheaper with a kit which doesn't include floats and you would need some time to figure adjuments and some tools to do it right. Your call, T

I don't agree with trying to rebuild it yourself. It requires some serious chemicals and a lot of carb knowledge to set it up correctly and to recognize when there is a problem that gaskets aren't going to fix. This is likely an electronic feedback carb and the big price differences are probably due to one company supplying new M/C solenoids and the other is not. You should be able to call the company or get this info from their website. Don't worry about whether the floats were changed or not. They had to be checked before rebuilding. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thank you both for your prompt reply and advice. The E3TERD carb is not listed specifically on most sites so may be a bit of an oddball. It appears to be a Holly 4180C so the differences may be minor. I'm from North Dakota and all the small town Ford Dealers have been squessed out by Ford and the larger Dealers offer no advice or help. Will continue to look for a manual with more details than my Haynes Repair Manuel. Thank you for all the work you do at your site.

Dnake1; Another opinion, for what it's worth. I'd stay away from rebuilt carbs. Very seldom will you get one that is 'jetted' correctly for your application. BTDT. I've had very good luck with Edelbrock carbs. They are new carbs that are designed on the old AFB/Carter platform and are fully adjustable for the application. You can buy them (some times cheaper than a rebuilt Motocraft) at most performance type auto parts stores. Electric choke, emissions legal, ect. Holley's in my opinion, are too temperamental. Too hard and expensive to modify. Just my opinion. Loren SW Washington
