I have 1975 ford f-250 390. I have had it for 9 years. When I turn the key in the ignition it doesn't want to start until I turn the key to off position. As soon as I do this it just fires up like it had been running all day. This happened after I changed a bunch of stuff to troubleshoot a problem, which ended up being the distributor.
I painstakingly made sure to put the new distributor in JUST like the old one only to have a mechanic take it out and move it in a 5 minute check. During the course of this repair I had taken the brain box out but then lost it and had to buy a new one. My gut feeling is that it is the ignition module that makes the starting difficult. It's like its not firing proper. I scored a used ignition module from a neighbor. It has a blue tab but the same wiring as the one that is in the truck. But the trucks tab is green. So...my questions are; why do you think it does has trouble starting and then starts upon turning it off? Can I put the ignition module in that has a different tab but same wiring? And lastly do you think the problem is the distributor? Phew. Hope you catch my drift. New to the site and already found lots of helpful info. Any help is appreciated!

I think I got it - You mean it cranks but waits to actually start when you let go of the key?

If so, what is missing is power to the coil during the time the starter is engaged. Pre electronic ign there was a wire on the solenoid to provide current during cranking and quit for "run" mode when you let go of the key. I forget if the early electronic ign used TWO little wires on that solenoid or just one?? I think the originals were marked "S" for start which you could just jumper to and the other had an "R" for resistor.

In all your messing with stuff did you change that if it had two?

Also: I do recall the color of the tab and that if they fit they worked but always found the right color so not certain on that now. It might be the issue and there may be an easy way around that??

Agree with Tom; That is classic control module failure. The colors do have to be the same, though. Sorry.
