Can't get shift handle off 1982 C3500 manual 4spd trans Sign In

I have a 1982 C3500 Chevrolet 2wd dual wheel with a 454 gas engine and a 4 speed manual transmission. The problem is, I am attempting to remove the engine and transmission as a unit but cannot figure out just how to remove the shifter handle. As you probably already know, the shifter handle is basically a 1/2" diameter rod with a bend it it at the bottom and threaded at the top for the ball to screw on. The bottom doesn't seem to be screwed into the rotating ball that is at the bottom of the handle and the top of the mixer for the trans. There is a hole in each side of the cast case, at the top rear of the trans where the aformentioned ball at the bottom of the handle is located, that I first thought were for a set screw in each side to hold the mixer ball in. After attempting to use various sizes of hex keys to remove any set screw that might have been in the holes, I determined that there weren't any set screws. I then attempted to feel around in the holes with a pick and there seemed like there were some type of spring pins holding the ball in. I attempted to push the pins in and lift the handle out but was unsuccessful due to what I believe to be not being able to hold both sides in equally at the same time. I then figured I would be better off using my time to find out just what procedure is the correct one to remove the handle before I break something not knowing what I was doing.Unsure

Thanks,

Take off the 4 bolts of the transmission top cover. The cover, shift forks and shifter will all come out as one. Make sure you don't lose the little detent springs. Good idea to tape some cardboard over the top to keep those from falling out or debris from falling in until you get this out and put the top plate back on.
