Growling noise when vehicle is stopped or moving

I have a 1999 new body style GMC k2500 pick-up. I don't use the truck much but here lately have started driving it. The vehicle sounds like I have a bad wheel bearing but makes the noise when the vehicle is at rest, not moving but the engine is running. I took it to the dealer, the only problem the dealer could find was a bad power steering pump (allegedly). The noise is still there along with an unpleasant vibration. I'm wondering if it might be a bad bearing in the alternator or A/C compressor? water pump? I'm hoping for suggestions on what the problem might be or how to track down a mystery noise. Thanks

If it can do it at rest (still) then it's likely a belt driven item. Check the PS fluid for starters. Does the noise get worse just steering it - then pump or low fluid would be likely. Anything that turns with the belt could be the culprit. If you are handy - take the belt off (make sure diagram is there for reinstallation routing) by retracting the tesioner and remove it - then spin each pulley and feel for wobble on any. PS pulley won't spin real free and lower crank won't spin at all, A/C should spin free as well as alternator, idler(s) tensioner, water pump and fan clutch with no significant "play" in them. Should have said first - It could be the belt itself. Make sure it's tight enough - you shouldn't be able to spin the alt pulley by hand. Try spraying it with WD-40 and see if noise goes away for a while. If so - replace the belt with a quality new one. If all that checks out go back and take the belt off and do those checks, T
