NV 3500 gear noise/whine, while applying gas, stops when pedal is released. Sign In

This vehicle is a 1995 chevrolet S-10 pick-up, with 4-WD. It has the NV 3500 transmision with a V-6 motor that has 185,000 miles on it. I got this truck with a blown transmision, the slider for 5th/reverse was broken in half. We removed the tranny, ordered a replacement slider from Cobra, did the disasemble and did not find any other major problems so the new slider went in and I was down the road. Now it has been about 1500 miles and a weird noise has started. It began in 5th with a high pitched whine that was agravating but liveable. this noise is only while the vehicle is under power, as soon as the gas is released the noise stops. That lasted a few days , now the noise is in 3rd and 4th too, and there is a sort of grind/bind when the vehicle comes off throttle. I thought it may have been a fluid level problem so I drained the tranny and replaced the fluid with 2 quart of Penzoil Synchromesh as called for. There was a bit of sludge and a few filings on the drain and fill magnets, but again nothing too bad. The truck ran well up until this. Now I don't know what to try except to replace the transmission with a rebuilt that will cost more than I can swing. Could this be a transfer case issue? Any sugestions will be greatly appreciated.

If the noise happens in a particular gear or gears only, the transfer case would be an unlikely culprit. If you can get the rear tires off the ground, you can drive the vehicle in the air. While under the vehicle you might be able to pinpoint the noise with a mechanics stethoscope.

The noise you are describing sounds like a bad pinion bearing in the rear end. Those will make a high pitch whine and only do it under load...

The bad thing is some times the noise transmitts up the driveline and will make it sound like it's coming out of the tranny...

I had an 03 Explorer doing that yesterday I was able to pin point with chassis ears....This one sounded like the noise was coming from the converter when you drove it...

Those can be hard to find because alot of the time when you jack them up to find the noise, you take the load off & the noise goes away.....You can look for play, chunks of metal or other clues....but if there aren't any that really does make it tough.

I know if it wasn't making noise before the tranny work then you would really think it had something to do with the tranny.....and it might but just don't rule out other areas and get tunnel vision on the tranny.....Wouldn't be the 1st time one area was worked on and another area failed at the same time
