I have a 1998 Chevy 3/4 ton 5.7 liter motor. The truck tends to run a little hot when pulling a trailer but returns to normal when running empty. Sometimes reaches 230 degrees. Have replaced thermostat and fan clutch flushed entire system twice. Still runs hotter when pulling. What am I missing or is this normal. Thanks

Ability of the coolant system to transfer heat into the atmosphere is important. You know sometimes when aluminum radiators get old, corrosion inside the radiator in the tubes will lessen its capacity to transfer heat. You could flush all day long, but you won't remove it. Replacing it would be the best choice. 230 is a little high, but not overheating. If the radiator is able to conduct heat more efficiently, you might see lower temps.

If you do a lot of towing you might want to consider getting a radiator with a thicker core.

Noisy but consider HD new fan clutch. Will reduce MPG some and to me annoyingly loud but not overheating is pleasingly nice. Have owned 2 of these engines. Temp gauge if moves at all for any reason system is stressed already.

Better clutch also better A/C anytime needed. Not suggested if towing if you can avoid it anyway,

Changed out radiator with bigger one and installed HD fan clutch. Seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the advice.
