RIGHT REAR BRAKE LOCKS UP Sign In

I HAVE A 1988 CHEVY EX. CAB TRUCK. 1 TON, 4 WHEEL DRIVE, 5.7 350 AUTO. JUST INSTALLED NEW RIGHT REAR WHEEL CYLINDER, BUT MY BRAKE ON THAT SIDE CONTINUES TO LOCK UP WITH THE SLIGHTEST PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE PEDAL. I INSPECTED ALL LINES, THEY ARE OKAY. THE FLUID LEVEL REMAINS STEADY. WHAT AM I MISSING??? WHY IS THE RIGHT REAR THE ONLY TIRE LOCKING UP?? PLEASE HELP, THIS IS MY ONLY TRANSPORTATION. ALL ANSWERS CAN BE SENT TO DAVE691971@YAHOO.COM. THANKS EVERYBODY

Re: RIGHT REAR BRAKE LOCKS UP Sign In

More questions than answers for the moment.

Was the old wheel cylinder leaking? Shoes soaked in brake fluid will drag differently.

Drum brakes as any really, things should be done in pairs. If a wheel cylinder on one side failed the other should be replaced as well.

You have some years of this which is fine but know that everything must be adjusted and in working order starting with the shoes adjusted to drum, return springs new or known good (cheap to replace) as they need to be a known resistance to overcome for braking action.

Cables to parking brakes must be free as a bird. If they can't return to totally OFF as seen inside the brake that smaller 1/4ish size spring on cable is all it has to release. If they can hang up you may notice that shoes don't reset to top anchor and the connector bar is not free - brakes and adjustments will be confused if they aren't in full return mode.

Also: Note position of shoes as they are installed. Is the one with more lining towards the rear of truck? It should be noticably larger than the leading shoe and if backwards on either side the correct one will have more friction. More: backing plate may have worn in to shoe locking the shoe - replace or relube on rest pads as needed.

Note: Drum brakes are so simple they are confusing people all the time - really!
