This is my husband's truck and it starts and runs, then stalls and won't run well upon restart(it starts enough usually to get it home to park it). Truck began doing this about a year and 1/2 ago, but it wasn't really bad and it was looked at by a family member who knows a little about autos(thought it was the distributor cap-replaced it). We don't use the truck much because it isn't reliable (don't want to be stranded somewhere), but used it over the summer to help someone in our family move. It was doing really great. Started up good, stayed running. Everything seemed fine. Then one day as we were driving it just stalled out (as it's done in the past), but this time it just wouldn't start again at all (it's done that one other time only a few hundred feet from our house and we had to push/pull it). This time we tried over and over to start it and finally had to get a ride to get our car and my brother so that he could help us push it. We pushed it back to my MIL house as that's where we had been so it wasn't too far from it. The next day we drove over there to get it and it started up perfectly fine. We would appreciate any ideas. Thanks so much.

These problems are near impossible to resolve via the internet. Must know if you have fuel pressure and spark at the time it won't run. Does it show any check engine lights? Has any tune up work been done aside from the distributor cap? Fuel and air filters?

The spark plugs are new. Fuel filter I think is new(ish) as husband had a fuel problem when he first got the truck. Air filter he changes when he does the oil change. When it is just trying to stall out, no lights come on until it's fully stalled then the normal 'first' lights come on (the lights that come on when you start the truck). We think it could be the battery. I remembered that it started doing this when we got a stereo system (got the CD/Stereo part free) and hooked it up (it's hooked up wrong as the kid that gave us the CD/Stereo didn't hook up the right wire so it resets itself every time the truck is off). This is why I'm thinking it's the battery. The stereo is too much for it to handle. The battery has never been changed since my husband got this truck back when he was 16/17 (4/5 years ago) and unsure if the guy he bought it from had changed it or what (the guy was in a nursing home and hadn't used the truck in a while). We were thinking of unhooking the stereo and changing the battery.

With this problem what you are going to have to do is, do as CH suggested. When it's not starting the 1st thing you have to do is find out what is missing, Spark or Fuel? This will narrow the field in 1/2 and then you trace down the fuel or spark problem.....

If you did work to the truck and a new problem popped up is one thing and of course you would double check all the work that was done, after that you need to start from scratch and trace the problem down. You can bounce around checking this checking that, replacing this or that but this would be a total luck shot. You may get lucky one the 1st or 2nd time but if not, then you have sunk a bunch of time & money into the truck and still have the same problem.

A battery isn't going to cause the truck not to start and then start all by itself without doing anything to the truck other than letting it sit.

The stereo probably just didn't get the memory power source hooked up or hooking into a ign source. There are 2 power sources for the stereo. An ign source, this powers the deck and is tied into a source that turns off when the key is turned off and a memory source. The memory is tied into a source that always has power as long as the battery is hooked up. It's for the clock, presets, all the memory stuff. If it doesn't get hooked up, the deck will work off the ign source but when the key is shut off it loses all memory, clock setting, presets, etc.

Checking for fuel & spark literally takes minutes. If this is something that is beyond your experience, I'm not trying to be mean but it would really be best to take it in to a shop to be checked.
