gas tank skid plate

Hello, I have a 1994 S-10 pickup. The plastic skid plate on the gas tank is cracked and split in several places. It rattles if you hit a bump or backing up. Is this thing all that important, or could I take it off and use truck bed liner to paint the tank. If it should be replaced, will I have to go to a dealership? Thanks, Ricky

It's there for a reason which is probably to prevent sparks if the tank was hit by rocks or something. I have to recommend fixing or replacing it as it's there for a reason. Auto body repair places or the parts stores may know of some matierals to fix it. That or a used one. T
