gmc sonoma tranny problems Sign In

i have a 2000 gmc sonoma 2.2L automatic and it has around 171,000 miles on it thats starting to have some transmission problems. i notice about 3 weeks after i got it that after i would be driving it for a good while that shifting from 1st to 2nd it would jerk alittle. not a big jerk but you could notice it if you paid attention. i checked codes on it and it had a transmission component slipping code. well i dont rip on it that hard and it wasnt that bad so i figured it wasnt a big deal. well i started my college classes again this past week which i have to drive on the interstate to get there. so after driving about 45 minutes i noticed that all asudden i was going from driving 65 mph with my rpm between 2500 to 3000 to driving 65 mph with my rpm 3500 to 4000 kinda like overdrive went out or something. im thinking that my trannys getting overheated but idk. fluids good in it. if anyone has any hints please tell me. im hoping it wont be a major repair.

What was the code number? What is the condition and level of the fluid in the transmission? Slip codes aren't a good thing and could mean burnt clutches or bands. You'll probably have to swing into a transmission shop and have them diagnose it.

i think it was p1870. its not really the slipping im worried about its not really that bad even though it still isnt a good thing. but i mean if thats possibly the cause of my problem then idk.

p1870 means the PCM is seeing that the torque converter is slipping. When this happens the PCM goes full line pressure, unlocks the converter, and can take the transmission out of 4th gear if it sees the fluid temperature getting too high.

You should drop the pan and check for bronze in the bottom of the pan. The stator shaft bushing is bronze and could be allowing pressure to bleed out causing the torque converter clutch to slip. You should take it into a trans shop and have them check it out. The slippage going on can overheat the fluid and take out the rest of the clutches in the tranny if you keep driving it that way.
