no spark to plugs

1962,Ford Truck,F500, with an inline 6 cyl. I know the motor is mechanicly sound. Turns over good. Did not fire so replaced the points, rotor, condenser, cap, now even the coil. Points are gapped properly, wires are hooked up to the coil. Replaced ignition switch it was in poor shape ( bought a new quality one, original style ). Getting power to the coil when the key is on. Wire diagram for ignition system might help a lot, right now just guessing on that. Wire to coil from distributor is hooked up to the negative side of coil. Any thoughts........Thanks

Maybe all the history on this might be helpful.... What was going on before it died?......Running good & just quit or wouldn't start up the next day...days....months???? Have you checked for spark & fuel?......Tested for power at the coil?

Yes as i said, there is power to the coil when the key is on. ( positive side ). The rig has been sitting for months or more. Need to get spark, not worried about fuel at this point.

What was the voltage reading at the positive side? What gap did you set the points at? If you hook up a test light & touch the neg side of the coil & crank the engine,,,,does the light flash?

Also make sure the rotor button turns when you crank the engine. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

voltage reading with key in 'on' position reads 6 volts, cranking it over it reads 9 volts or so. Gap was set at 16 thou. There is a reading of 000 on negative side when cranking over no power there at all. Rotor is spinning properly.

The voltage seems a bit low.......If I remember right, you would see around 9v in the run position. The ones that used a dual ballast resistor would have 9v in the run position & 12v in the crank position... Have you ohmed out the coil yet???.....Check the primary side and make sure there isn't any continuity between the primary side & secondary side

Disagree Sid (first time) it goes thru a ballast resistor as this ign is based on a 6v system. Cranking not just key on should give whatever bat voltage is with the load on while cranking. Still don't know why no spark so far so need more info. Coil test should show. If flooded out bad enough it won't spark. Been there done that, T

This system cranks on 12v and runs on 9v as Sidom said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Of course the starter draw will pull it down some and that would be the main reason it's wired to bypass the resister during cranking but the coil is powered with full battery power during cranking and run through a resister to pull it down to 9v in run position.

You need to make sure that you are using the correct coil. Some use Internal resisters and some use external. If you are only getting 9v to the coil in the "run" position, you don't want the coil to further reduce it. It should say internal or external resister on the coil.
