New alternator could be bad. "new means nothing nowdays".
put a meter on it.

Check your ground cable to the truck, also.
check for "fraid" battery cables.
1984: 30 year old copper wire loses it's ability to conduct electricity.

trucker; Agree with Ratrace; What kind of voltage are you seeing at idle and at 2500rpm? The voltage regulator is built into the alternator. A 65A alternator should be sufficient. Did you replace the battery and alternator for this same problem? Most people will have access to a voltmeter, but few to an ampmeter. If the battery is low, the alternator will pump out amperage to try and recharge. As it is doing this, the voltage will be lower than normal. Once the battery is fully charged (assuming it is good), the amp output will lower and the voltage come back into specs. 13.6-14.6V. Before you get started, take a voltage reading at the battery. Then, start the engine and note the voltage readings. Repost these readings, if you will. Also, make sure that you have at least 12V to the power terminal on the alternator.
