Search Auto Parts Search truck shaking at 40 mph Sign up here!   Email This Post Auto Repair Home>> Truck Repair>> Truck Repair Advice c_gatewood New User May 29, 2015, 5:27 AM Post #1 of 3 (1869 views) truck shaking at 40 mph Sign In Hey I have a 1997 Chevy k1500 z71 and it shakes really bad at 40mph the tires are fine the tie rod ends are firm wheel barings are solid but I can't see why it's shaking yesterday my buddy was driving next to me when it started and he said my front 2 wheels where wobbling side to side and when I slowed down they stopped I jacked up the front end and checked my pitman arms are good but I can move my wheel side to side with the steering wheel locked and when I do it to one wheel both wheels move is this my problem would this cause the shaking at 40 mph if so is it the steering gear box if not what is it please help!!! There will be some play in this type steering but not much. This also should have a stabilizer shock for center link but still not do this if not used, missing or failed. There's only one Pitman arm sport - the other is an idler arm. Steering box pretty rare to all known on these. Try checking for any motion with wheels hoisted by lower control arms, wheel unlocked by key just turned only far enough to you can turn shaft of steering from under the hood while another watches for worn parts. While hoisted just a little check ball joints when hoisted by lower control arms. Even horrible they don't usually cause this. Wheels should spin free and coast easily. If not perhaps a dragging brake? Don't know what did to determine bearings were OK. No play and no grind feel mostly felt when driving. If any play they are long past toast! Back with wheels on ground the same but turn the steering wheel and look as best you can at all tie rod ends. Good, well balanced tires and good straight rims most wouldn't go into a wobble fit even with worn parts. You just haven't found the source problem (probably is at wheels and or tires and can't see it) then exacerbated by other worn front end parts while driving it, T Tom Greenleaf Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator May 29, 2015, 7:56 AM Post #3 of 3 (1858 views) Re: truck shaking at 40 mph Sign In Sorry for two posts - To isolate if a tire or wheel rotate them to rear. If problem goes away that's hard suggestion of a problem with a tire or wheel. Also - if front rotors are the least bit rusty and loose with wheel off they can drop dirt or rust unseen in between them and hub of bearing causing wild wobble.
