I just replaced the water pump in my 92 f150 5.0 2 wheel drive automatic truck. i have noticed today there is antifreeze lying on my driveway.. some spot have gotten pretty large. It is hard to tell, but when i get underneath i swear it looks like the water pump is leaking again and falling around the harmonic balancer. i thought i got a great seal around it. is it possible that thing is bad? i did buy the cheapest pump at auto zone. also when i drive the truck it get kind of hot for a sec then goes back down to normal operating temp. thought that was wierd.

Yes it could be a bad pump; regardless of what you paid for it? But don’t put blinders on because it maybe leaking from somewhere else. Timing cover gasket may have become damaged when you removed original water pump. The corner of the intake manifold could be leaking from a rotted gasket and the anti freeze is snaking its way down and running off of the pump? All I can say is get a pressure tester on the system and confirm where the leak originates from. As for the temperature doing strange things; you may have had a bit of an air lock that has worked its way out or if the engine became hot from the original pump leaking; the thermostat may have become damaged and has started sticking closed at times? Dan.

Your heater core is probably leaking as that is the only way you could smell anti-freeze with the heater-a/c on. And unfortunatly replacing the heater core usually mean removing the dash which is a big job. To be sure, have the engine cooling system pressure tested and coolant will drain out the a/c evaporator drain. That will confirm a heater core leak.

Thank for your help. It kept running hot on me so i went to a lower tstat like a 160, still got hot, i put a temp sensor in that goes to the gauage and changed all the hoses. Still got hot, but i acidently hit another temp sensor that was located above the tstat that was so corroded it just fell apart, that also was where the antifreeze was seaping from. I did pressure test and it test fine.
