Hi
I have 97 Chevy suburban K 1500 5.7. Didn't notice any pre symptoms before this started. First start up in mornings starter would turn normal then drag several times and repeat several times before truck would fire. Once started engine would run very rough then smooth out. Also after putting into drive and accelerating it would fall on its face and even die at times. I have noticed that the problem is substantially worse after a heavy dew or rain over night. After starting and getting past the acceleration problem symptoms basically disappear the rest of the day even after sitting at work for 8 to 10 hours. On occasion the starter will drag just for a second later in day but it is very intermittent. Okay list of repairs I have done. New oem recommended battery, new starter (oem is the large starter not the small starter), I have removed all cables running from battery to starter and replace the connections except the ground to bottom of engine block. It looks very clean and is securely bolted on tightly. I did replace the connection at battery. Battery also received new connection. So if you need any more info I will do whatever it takes to get it for you. I very much appreciate any help or recommendations you can give me! Thank you Heath

IDK what you mean by "drag" then start? NO matter. It starts so battery is then out of the picture.
If dampness is clearly aggravating this check whole air flow path that it's all on right. Dist cap might get damp but none on these to me ever from any normal to hard rains.

Next is see if fuel pressure is up to par and holds. Wildish maybe if this can run lousy, slow to start right up it might be choking on raw fuel?

Codes would definitely be showing with those complaints to help,

I will have to check fuel pressure tomorrow cause I do not have a gauge. What I mean by dragging is that it will crank the engine properly then it turns very slow like it would with a very low battery then it will crank properly again for few rotations then back to the very slow crank it may do this three to four times before starting. What puzzles me all of the symptoms I have explained started at the same time. I did forget to mention it does have a engine light on and the code shows a egr valve but that was before this new issue.

OK- just about the starter struggle and change crank speed. You said you changed or fixed a cable end and believe battery is fine. Cables IMO suk and still in question. You should see this as a voltage drop at battery eyelet vs batter bolt and another test down to eyelet at starter.

Ground is equally as important. As said, once running that issue is over about the way it runs as starter takes tons more juice than anything else,

Sounds like it's burning bits of fuel. I second the fuel pressure suggestion. This system requires a MINIMUM of 55PSI to even run. The spec is 60-66PSI.

I'd be looking at the crank sensor as a possible culprit. At least before it gets worse and blows the intake gasket or pops the starter of the side of the block.

A crank sensor issue in combination with a weakish battery can cause the PCM to over advance the ignition timing during cranking causing kick backs, back fires, breaking the starter drive, or in worse case, blowing the starter right of the starter boss.

A worn distributor gear could cause that scenero also.

OK I've been doing some reading and not but a few min ago I ran across the symptoms for crank sensor it also said faulty ignition has some of the simular symptoms. Can a faulty Ignition cause a running problem after start?

Well Discretesignals

Concidering all the symptoms I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm going to check for codes first before replacing just to make sure. Thanks for your feedback it is very much appreciated!

Thought I would check in. I replaced the crank position sensor. No codes involving the crank sensor but nothing else really fit the symptoms so I figured for $59 and a simple install no biggie. Well this suburban has never in the time I have owned it ran this good! Thank you for the advice it was very much appreciated!

Thanks for reopening my thread! I installed the new crankshaft position sensor. Truck ran great the first day. Unfortunately the next morning the symptoms were back. The running problem changed though. Now when I accelerate it doesn't stall it's strange not sure how to explain it but I can put pedal to the floor and it doesn't accelerate but it doesn't try and die either.when I installed the sensor the directions said to check for damage do to bearing getting warn and sagging of crank can cause contact to sensor. Everything looked OK. The sensor came with two shims I did not install them. My question is it possible the clearance is to tight and giving a inaccurate reading to the computer or possibly the distributor. How would I go about eliminate the distributor as being the culprit? Thanks for the advice if anyone can offer any!

Probably the best way to check the clearance between the sensor and the tone wheel is to put a piece of modeling clay on the end of the sensor. Then make sure the tone wheel tooth is pointing directly at the crank sensor hole. Put the sensor in and pull it back out and see how much thickness the clay has where it made an impression. You want the sensor as close to the tone wheel as possible without making contact.

Is the check engine light on? Any codes stored? Maybe it is time to connect up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor the pressure with the gauge laying on the windshield while the problem is happening to eliminate a fuel delivery issue.

Check engine light is on. Code is for egr valve. I have one ordered it's in transit to me right now. I tried cleaning it but the light comes back on so I decided to replace with new. I have a friend at work with fuel gauge I will try and get that done tonight and share results. Thanks

The friend I thought had fuel pressure gauge doesn't have one. I talked to local shop owner he said he will give me a hand so I'm leaving truck Friday at his shop and comin in first thing Saturday so we can get pressure when it usually falters the most. I did have a odd and I believe relevant thing happen yesterday. The ground at block it has two nuts one behind ground closest to engine the one in front of cable. When I originally checked it I put wrench on back side and socket on front it was good and tight. This time I just used the front nut. I got about a full turn then it was tight. Got in truck fired right up then check engine light turned OFF it ran great. Next morn all symptoms returned engine light is on again and running problem is worse than before. I will have those pressure #'s soon as possible sat. Thanks

May not be the problem but fix the ground to block connection! Why the nuts first, then cable and another nut? Just might be factory and messed up. Make it right with one proper bolt or stud and one nut - all clean and good. If messed up find another good grounding spot.

Said earlier by Discretesignals: If wrong power to starter with just the wrong problem starter can break off an ear of engine block and you don't want that!

If the distributor is not installed correctly it will set a P1345 code.

i have ran into it ware it did not set a code but if you watched on the scaner timing will jump from -timing to advanced timing quicker than scaner can pick up the degrees because of a worn distributor gear not all things will show up as a code but if it were off a tooth then yes it will give you that code
