1999 F-150 starts runs fine then no start Sign In

I have a ford F150 99 4.6 L four wheel drive I can go out and start it drive it for a short or long time doesnt matter stop some place turn it off then come back out in a couple minutes and all it will do is crank over.I was told maybe fuel filter Im not sure when last time it was changed but also someone said something about fuel relay sticking or possibly fuel pump going out. This has happened several times now My understanding is that if a fuel pump was going out it is just going to quit not work and not work.Someone also said it may have to do with the factory installed alarm system which came with the truck. Im at a loss here can you helpCrazy

I guess you need to treat this as a no start. That means you have to check for spark, fuel pressure, and injector activity when it doesn't want to start. Finding out what is missing would give you an idea which direction to go.

If I treat it as a no start why does it not do it all the time there isnt a check engine light on either

Because the problem is intermittent. You can only figure out what is missing when the problem is occurring. If there are certain conditions you can duplicate to make the problem occur, that would make it easier to troubleshoot.

Here is the procedure to isolate the problem.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

That's the best procedure to nail down the missing link. Before you even get your hands dirty just listen for fuel pump WHEN this happens. Bet nothing. Silly relay was common. Should be same as the A/C relay so just swap them if so. If no change gotta get dirty and start the hunt,
