Hello, 1999 Chevy S10 with 120000 miles is the car i purchased 4 months ago from a dealership down the street for 2000$. The guy that sold it to me was steve. After purchasing the truck, my neighbor, kevin, (works at imperial toyota as a parts manager) comes over and says "let me take the truck to my guys and theyll fix up any odds and ends. So since i wasnt getting my license for another two months, i figured why not. So kevin then took the truck. The next two months went by quick and i hadnt heard anything about the truck. A week before i get my license he says that the truck didnt pass inspection and the engine cylinders are all clogged up with gunk. He ends up bringing the truck to a mechanics shop right next door to where I work (i know all the guys who work at this shop, the manager is named rudy). So rudy takes a look at it and says theres a 40% fuel leakage in cylinder 2 causing a misfire. So then the truck goes back to the dealership that i bought it from. Kevin starts telling steve that he is responsible for fixing the car. Kevin then says that he needs to replce the engine head. A week or two went by and we heard nothing so my dad went down to the dealership and asked what was happening. Steve says that the engine head doesnt need to be replaced but the fuel injectors and the fuel pump are no good. So after those things were replaced i finally got my truck back. To reset the computer system i drove the truck on a road trip that weekend. On my way back the fuel indicator was going crazy and then the check engine light came back on. Also when the truck was in idle it rumbled a lot. So it went back to the dealership again and i told him it wasnt fixed. The next day he gives the truck back claiming he replaced the MAP sensor and that the problem was solved. After 15 mins of driving it the fuel indicator was going crazy again and there was still a bad rumble. So now we are at today. Im not sure whether to drive the truck till the check engine comes back on or just to give it back to him right now. Is there an obvious problem with the truck? Is steve not doing his job and fixing it? Should i ask for a trade out? Its just been a crazy few months and i wanted another perffesional veiw on the situation. Thanks, Paul

if you knew what cods were coming up with the check engine light it could be helpful some shops will put them on the paper work right know i am thanking it could be any thing but wondering if its not a leaky intake gasket or cracked intake thanking they were plastick an easy test for this is with the engine running spray carb cleaner around the intake ware it bolts to the head and together above the injectors the engine should drop or pick up in rpm

which engine? Looks like you bought a worn out junker that is being passed back and forth between idiots. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Well these mechanics are running the codes then fixing what they can and then seeing if the check engine light will come back on. I know its a junker car but you get what you pay for but i expected to get a year or two out of it. The goal here is to get the check engine light to stay off so it can pass inspection. I did drive the truck for a good 30 mins tonight and there was still a good bit of rumbling but the feul indicator seemed back to normal. Does the map sensor take time to kick in and read correctly or will it give an acurate reading right away?

The only thing that the engine computer learns is how to fine tune the fuel trim in closed loop, how to control the idle speed, and how to modify transmission line pressure as parts inside the transmission wear out. It does get the BARO reading from the MAP, which if wrong can affect the fuel injection curve. The MAP sensor doesn't need to learn anything. It just converts pressure into a voltage signal the engine computer uses to determine the pressure inside the intake manifold in relation to atmospheric pressure where you live. Rumbling could be many things and is kind of a generic term. If the rumbling was caused from a misfire, the engine computer should be picking that up and setting misfire codes. Maybe you need a second opinion. If the fuel gauge sender is messing up, that could cause the EVAP monitor to hang up which can fail you during inspection. If the light does come back on, write down the code number. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Paul, Sorry - it seems like invasion of privacy and isn't that accurate but are you from MA or RI? I am in/from MA. RI is its own bird with inspections. You can go get an emissions "R" reject sticker now but always - any vehicle must pass 100% all safety items - a long list to check off. An emissions fail will get you a black "R" (rejected) sticker which is legal to drive on for 30 days, free to redo in that time. A red "R" the vehicle isn't supposed to be driven on a public road right away! You were asked which engine of 3 possible but said between the lines someone said it need a (singular) cylinder head so if one is the 4 cyl engine. Not the point. Is this thing ready to really drive yet at all? Front end parts all good? I don't care if it runs at all these eat front end parts if not greased a LOT! When you start this up cold the engine and controls are in a "grace" period for the time till it reads a certain engine temp then computer engine controls take over totally not just partially. A "hard" code would light the check engine light quickly meaning a clear fault is seen. Of all these people you mention none have so much as pin pointed what item(s) are left to fix or anything yet? This is all over the place with sorry to say idiots. Friends or not get codes yourself if need be free at Autozone just post the #s. 1999 - the concern at this age is safety items not so much emissions now at the age. You have to know it's OK with all that. Fine if a just something silly but not if brakes, front end, suspension or rust issues are dangerous. Legal or not you don't want an accident over something wrong. What do you mean it's "rumbling" and fuel something doesn't read? Do you mean the gauge showing how much fuel you have or something else? If they just did a fuel pump the problem was caused by not doing that properly or faked it somehow. I'm not convinced you have good help of all the people you listed may mean well but as vehicles go this isn't rare at all it's just old as rust belt vehicles go. BTW - dealers don't seem to do so well with older vehicles simply because a lot is the newer car/truck stuff both warranty for new and the first resale usually such that about 7 years old dealers are not selling vehicles that old or with miles much over 60K so the independent shops get the most work and no reason they can't handle about anything for you perhaps (one by one with shops and techs) especially if older. In short - go get your sticker! I think you are past the time period now but "dealers" can't sell you a vehicle unless YOU are in the biz that can't pass inspection in either state! If you are under 18 for any reason you could just go get all your $$ back too! T

I believe it has a v6 engine. The mechanics have been very unclear about the issues nevermind telling us the codes. Im hearing everything through my dad so i dont know much. My brother however does have a code reader, so as soon as i get the check engine light to come back on ill have him read the codes. Also i do have a rejection sticker but i think its coming close to the expiration.

OK - Get codes with whatever device your brother has and if no good info try Autozone (or others do this as a courtesy too) just post the #s not their suggestions as codes do NOT tell you what to do rather the circuit with a fault. This mix of people and lack of info is more trouble than the problem probably is. If need be at least MA you can get "re-rejected" once for free and then pay for another buys you another 30 days. Somehow this is messed up for a direction with too many "cooks in the kitchen" and you aren't getting answers - why IDK. At least did the last inspection give you the papers with all the items checked off for safety? Did they really check anything or just plug it in? Go somewhere else if they did nothing because you should know. Any place but dang MA can be such a frenzy to do as many stickers as possible to make a buck it's barely helping YOU or anyone just another expense and it's YOUR vehicle YOU should want it right, T

Drove it 100+ miles and the check engine light never came back on, however the feul indicator read empty for the last 40 miles even though i had just filled it. Its now going to go back to steves and we shall see what he has to say.

Pump and gauge should look like this.......... If that lower right black thing and rod is bent from hacked installation it wont read properly. You said it was new didn't you? Hmmm? Also make sure the plug to this unit is in good shape and use electric grease on connections. ONE is for the gauge but problem could still be elsewhere with that. Do reset your trip odo when known full just anyway to see how far you've gone since known full and can calculate your MPG as well, T

Well just got it back. He replaced the pump, and it seems to be running and reading fine. We will be taking it in for inspection soon. Hopefully we wont have any more issues.
