I have distinct "scratching noise" coming from one of the pumps, how can I diagnose so I can replace the correct parts?

The noise sounds like it is a bearing or loose wheel that the serpentine belt is controlling, alternator, water pump, power steering, ac compressor. I apologize, not a mechanic so I may be stating this wrong. The vehicle is operating fine, I want to avoid a breakdown in the future. The noise is continuous and steady.

You're going to have to isolate which component is emitting the sound. You may be able to feel it if you remove the belt and move the pulleys by hand. If you take it to a competent shop, they have techniques for listening and isolating sounds.

Thanks for your help, turns out it was the belt tensioner, center bolt sheared off, pulley wheel was grinding into engine block..

That should have been pretty obvious.
