88 Chevy 1 ton, 2wd, 150k miles, with 454 engine has cracked exhaust manifolds. I am about to purchase this truck, cheap, knowing that there are several problems but none appear to be major. The one of most concern is the cracked manifolds. Is this a common problem and does it indicate another problem or is it just typical wear and tear. I don't know the history of the truck, but it appears to be farm use and doesn't show signs of abuse. Can the manifolds be repaired or is it best to replace with new, or headers?

They can be welded but it's usually just temporary and cracks again. Replacing the manifold is the best way to repair it.

You know - I've run into several over MANY years on vehicles with no abuse and some never have a problem and are overworked so I plead IDK. Both on same engine is a first to me unless water was involved via cleaning (I don't like using water on an engine ever) or perhaps has been exposed to too deep of water while engine was fully hot.

Welding 'cast' metal just hasn't shown as strong as other type welding so I would replace vs that as Hammer suggested.

Start now with the penetrating oils as the bolts/nuts if used on anthing about taking them off will be a pill or worse,

yes 454 manifolds are a pain. welding with low heat with (nickel) rod will work, manifold should be machined off after, install 2 gasket of high grade (mr gasket ect) will prolong this problem longer. ( good luck)Wink
