1996 Chevy FWD Z-71 235,000 miles auto trans with A/C. Starts fine when cold or cooled off but turns over very slow when hot. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, distrbutor, cam & crank sensors. Have run injector cleaner through 3 or 4 tanks of gas & truck runs fine. Just seems to start hard when hot. Any idea?

What do you mean by "turns over slow"? Do you mean it actually cranks slower? What engine does it have? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That sounds like a bad starter but you need to test the battery capacity first. Once you know you have sufficient battery reserve, then you can test starter draw. Anything over 250A would be excessive. This needs to be test while the truck is hot and the problem is present.

The starter does it's job even when hot and the problem occurrs Seems maybe like a vapor lock thought I've never encountered such a thing I would like to know how to test the wiring between the battery, the starter & the computer I live & work in the northeast where we have lots of salt laid down on the roads to melt the snow & ice. If this is not a temperature sensor problem then perphaps a bad ground?

If you think you know better, then go for it. By the way, there is no such thing as a vapor lock in that system.

HT couldn't have said it any better. 1) Check battery 2) Check starter draw 3) Fuel injection doesn't vapor lock. In fact, I haven't run into a vapor lock problem in, probably, 30 years. Without taking the time to check, if this has an adjustable distributor, over advanced timing can cause the symptom. Now, you said the 'starter does it's job'. Do you mean that the engine cranks over, just fine, but won't start? That would be something totally different. Loren SW Washington

When the engine is hot the starter works harder to turn the engine. Upon having the battery tested the reading was 10.59 & Bad Battery come up on the screen. AutoZone, they couldn't test starter draw. So I guess I need a battery. Only 6.5 years old

Nope, can't test starter draw with a bad battery. 6.5 yrs old, and it's bad? Geeeeez. Go figure. Loren SW Washington

Good catch, HT....That's one of those that you've got to hold the throttle open until the rods come out of the block for it to sync. I hate that when we have to do it, especially on a high-miler. Loren SW Washington
