Engine knocking with no warning... Sign In

Parked truck on saturday, went to start on friday, it would just clunk when turned it over, it finally started and is knocking really bad. What would it be when one minute its fine and the next its not. Checked oil just before that and had brown gunk on cap, sometimes just condensation.
Knocking kinda sounds from top end but not sure. Any suggestions??

does the noise change when it is warm? A bit of gunk around the cap is normal. Was any on the dipstick?

Well, only had it running for maybe 10 minutes, cause I didn't want to do more damage if internal.
Oil on dipstick looks normal, dark cause I haven't change the oil in a while.

?? Does oil pressure read within norms? Use a separate gauge from truck's if needed.

Try to describe the noise more. Better when run a few minutes or worse? Hard knock, light knock, ticking, double knock etc.

Could it be a belt driven item? Any could, water pumps can make knocking sounds as I guess any item could. Take belt off for a quick check if suspect to rule out belt driven items,
