I have a 96 Taho with 172k miles and 5.7 engine. Motor cranks but doesn't catch takes several tries then starts. Seems like run on a little between starting attempts. Once running is smooth with normal idle. Problem is especially bad in wet weather. Also if I hit gas hard the engine hesitates stalls and has small backfire. Had lot of old codes and cleared gonna take to shop to read. No problems driving when warmed up. Haven't done a major tune up in a very long time, wondering if cap, rotor, wires, plugs etc are getting tired. I appreciate your help and can provide more info if needed. Thank you

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Reading the codes may give you some insight into it also.

Low fuel pressure high on the list. Check and verify that and that it can hold,

Scanned codes and showed mass air sensor bad would a clogged air intake give same results ie old or blocked air filter. All other checks were OK just didn't want to replace MAS if not necessary

You could have easily set that code yourself while working on it. If you had it unplugged and turned the key on for even a second or if you ran it with the intake snorkel not totally sealed off. I doubt it would cause a "no start"

Thank you hammer time those were also my thoughts. I did unplug it and probably put the code in my self. Am thinking since everything else is ok need new tune up components. Bought vehicle used and have never done anything except oil changes in about 7 years so its probably my bad. I will accept my spanking graciously. Thank you

Although it may actually need the tune up stuff, I really doubt it is preventing the car from starting.

Engine starts after a fuss and runs good no acceleration probs no misses etc. only problem is damp overnights and rain. Once warmed up problem gone. Live in SC so get a lot of damp nights. Could I possibly have a cracked injector? Gonna change cap rotor plugs wires etc cause have no idea how old. Runs and starts no problem after warmed up. All other issues have been elimaneted so I am inclined to think that I have been neglectful. I did have a fitting break from manifold and cause coolant to go everywhere but that was before this problem. Thank you

Thank you so much. Engine will start with a little fussing then no problem. Only happens in damp or raining conditions no fault codes after reset So can only assume needs some tlc can go 2 3 days no problem only when rain or damp. Am old school and have much experience with old style motors. This computer stuff gets me. Still it goes back to basics in your original answer which leads me to component failure. Gonna replace plugs wires cap and rotor and tune do we'll see. Will let you know. Thank you for your help

As I recall you had a wet weather issue. The jury may still be out until you get some wet weather.

If you read the thread it was mentioned. Thread closed as it is from August and probably solved by now. Please read forum rules and don't post on old threads. This one locked and can be re-opened by request of original poster upon request,
