post locked   engine cooling system prob.

'04 Dodge Dakota 4.7L v8 - Have a problem that is stumping 2 mechanics - When the engine coolant heats up, it puts coolant into the overflow tank, but doesn't draw it back. When the engine cools (12 hours) I open the radiator cap and the system is still under pressure and now low on coolant. I have to syphon it out of the overflow tank and put it back manually into the radiator. Replaced the water pump, the thermostat, the radiator, cleaned the overflow tub and tank and 3 different caps. There are no hydrocarbons in the coolant.
Any ideas on what is causing this?

How do you know that? What tests were performed?

What tests were performed? When the engine cools the pressure should decrease as well, unless other gases are present. With the radiator cap off and the vehicle running do you get constant bubbles? Consistant bubbles could be leaning toward excessive gases in the system. Also starting with the vehicle cold and radiator cap on, how fast do your radiator hoses become firm? If they get firm fairly quick, before the coolant itself warms, this is also a sign of excessive gases in the system. Last but not least, as this sounds like it could be a head gasket issue, I would perform a leakdown test on all cylinders. This test will quickly identify a bad head gasket as you will see bubbles coming from the radiator.
